Gears of War 4 Is Balanced for Xbox One Controller Before Mouse and Keyboard – “The Core of the Game is Around a Controller”
Gears of War 4 Is Balanced for Xbox One Controller Before Mouse and Keyboard – “The Core of the Game is Around a Controller”-January 2024
Jan 17, 2025 3:32 PM

After a full decade of leave, Gears of War is finally coming back to PC with the fourth game in the series, and it is not just going to be a normal port. Microsoft is making sure Gears of War 4 comes with everything a true PC game as to offer, and more. But when it comes to controls, developer The Coalition thinks the upcoming shooter is still very much a console game first, and that is why the team is working to “make sure that the controller experience, which has been the legacy of the game, is definitely perfect.”

Both Controller and Mouse and Keyboard are "Really Important" to The Coalition, But the Core of Gears of War 4 "Is Around a Controller"

Between the two inputs i.e. controller and mouse and keyboard, The Coalition is keeping things equal, without prioritizing one over the other, but the developer thinks that the core of Gears of War 4 is around a controller, and that is why the team is working to fine-tune the controls with the standard Xbox One controller first. Ryan Cleven, the upcoming sci-fi third-person shooter's lead multiplayer designer spoke to IGN about it. He said:

“We definitely work from the controller out. We do play [with] mouse and keyboard, but the core of the game is around a controller.”

“I don't think that we...would say that we have like, one of the other as the priority; they're both really important to us. But, we have to make sure that the controller experience, which has been the legacy of the game, is definitely perfect.”

Even though Microsoft is working to bring PC and console gaming close, Gears of War 4 doesn’t allow PC and Xbox One players to compete against each other in competitive multiplayer mode. Players from both platforms, however, will be able to team up and play the co-op versus mode together, thanks to Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program. Also, PC players have a choice; they can either play with mouse and keyboard, or with Xbox One controller.

“We don't really balance the PC versus the Xbox, right, so they're each kind of balanced independently. They're all using the same core tuning; so, when we look at the PC players versus PC players, they can choose to use a mouse and keyboard or they can use a controller. That's up to the PC players. On the Xbox, we tune the game internally with a controller, so everything is tuned to be balanced that way, and then we make sure that the two groups, when they're playing competitively online, they aren't actually playing with each other. ”

Gears of War 4 will be out on October 11 for Windows PC and Xbox One. The game’s system requirements were revealed a couple of weeks ago, you can check them out here. The shooter features a very extensive graphics settings menu on PC, with options for Async Compute, multi-GPU and much more; you can check it all out here.
