Gaming exhibition hits Melbourne-January 2024
Jan 15, 2025 6:51 PM

The organisers of Melbourne's annual Freeplay Independent Games Festival have teamed up to launch Game/Play, a game-inspired six-week-long exhibition that mixes art and gaming at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.

The exhibition will feature more than 40 works from local artists, as well as playable versions of Aussie-developed independent games, such as Solar 2, Antichamber, Once Upon a Spacetime, and Captain Forever.

Every Thursday night, the exhibition will turn its attention to board games, allowing participants to either play their own from home or choose from the exhibition's own, which currently includes Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Brass, Fluxx, and Once Upon a Time.

Game events will also be run on October 1 and October 29, similar to Freeplay's Lemon Joust Club (but with more games), and there will be a Game Jam session. The latter will take place on October 15 and will invite participants to draw level designs, creatures, backgrounds, and ideas for games; these will be given to developers on October 16, who will have just one day to turn them into fully functional games.

Game/Play will run from September 24 until November 5 at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. For more information, visit the Freeplay website.
