Gaming retailer GameStop has announced that it made $3.15 billion in sales during the nine-week holiday period between Thanksgiving and New Year, a 9.3 percent increase on what it made during the same period in 2012.

Much of the interest came, perhaps unsurprisingly, from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, with new hardware sales increasing by 99.8 percent year-on-year. Things weren't so rosy for software sales, however, as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games were down 22.5 percent on 2012.
GameStop did note that sales of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 titles were strong--but this wasn't enough to stem the decline of the older consoles and their comparatively whopping install base.
"New software sales came in below our expectations," said chief financial officer Rob Lloyd in a statement, but added that "GameStop now expects its fourth quarter and full year 2013 same store sales to be at the high end of the current guidance range."
Last week GameStop's shares plummeted after Sony announced its streaming service PlayStation Now, although the retailer has said it hopes to work with Sony to sell subscriptions to the new service from its stores.
