Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 to Focus on Updates for Announced Games Rather Than New Announcements-November 2024
Nov 16, 2024 4:36 AM

The next big livestreamed event in the games industry is Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023, scheduled to broadcast across YouTube, Twitch, and various social channels on Tuesday, August 22nd, starting at 11 AM Pacific Time (2 PM Eastern Time, 7 PM British Time, 8 PM local time).

However, it won't be a show focused on new game announcements. Organizer Geoff Keighley revealed as much in an interview with VideoGamesChronicle, where he mused that the schedule is more about updates for the big announced games due in the next twelve months or so. Two of those games were specifically singled out: Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth Wukong.

It’s going to be an exciting show with new looks at many announced upcoming games like Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth Wukong. This year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live is less about announcing brand-new projects and more about giving fans updates on some of the biggest games due out over the next year.

Alan Wake 2 is no surprise. After all, Remedy is a European-based studio, and its game will be published in less than two months from the date of the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 show.

On the other hand, the confirmation of Black Myth Wukong is definitely a welcome surprise. Last we heard, the stunning blend of Soulslike and Chinese martial arts action game in development at Game Science was targeting a generic 2024 launch window, though perhaps the developers will provide more concrete details on the release during the show. Black Myth Wukong is also rumored to be playable on the Gamescom showfloor, according to sources quoted by Insider Gaming. A playable demo available to the public would be another hint that the development is progressing smoothly.

STALKER 2 is yet another game that might have a big presence at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023. While Keighley did not name it, the developers confirmed that a public demo will be available in the Xbox public booth. Just a few days later, the German Plaion store listed the game coming out on December 1st, and that's a possible announcement scheduled during the broadcast.

At any rate, Keighley downplaying new announcements doesn't mean there won't be any. For example, Metro developer 4A Games will attend Gamescom this year, which sparked rumors surrounding a possible reveal of the next Metro game. After all, publisher THQ Nordic (now known as Embracer Group) confirmed that the studio was working on the project over four years ago. Of course, 4A Games had to deal with everything that happened to Ukraine in the last eighteen months, but an announcement could still be coming in a week.
