GameFly acquires Direct2Drive
GameFly acquires Direct2Drive-October 2024
Oct 20, 2024 9:10 PM

Much as Netflix has done with movies, GameFly has largely cornered the market for mail-order game rentals for console and handheld titles. The company also has an eye for the PC gaming market, announcing today that it has purchased the Direct2Drive digital distribution platform from News Corp. subsidiary IGN Entertainment.

GameFly did not indicate if PC games would factor into its rental-based business model. With the purchase, GameFly will now oversee the digital distribution platform, which lets gamers buy and download more than 3,000 PC and Mac games. GameFly did not indicate how, or whether, it would be integrating the Direct2Drive platform into its current rental business model. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Currently, GameFly offers a variety of subscription plans for those who own console and handheld gaming platforms, ranging from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to the DS and Game Boy Advance. At the $15.95-a-month level, gamers are able to check out one game at a time. For $22.95 a month, gamers can have up to two titles at any given time.
