Unlike traditional platform holders like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, Valve does not want to put any limitations on the content permitted on Steam Machines, cofounder Gabe Newell has said.
"We're trying to make it as open as possible," Newell said on Reddit. "If EA wants to put Origin on it, that would be fine, etc... (trying to pick an example of something that people think we would prohibit)."
This statement is hardly surprising, as Valve has been very clear prior to this announcement that Steam Machines are designed with openness in mind. However, given the public squabble between Valve and Electronic Arts, Newell's comments have even more weight.
Although Newell would seemingly have much to talk about on Reddit (SteamOS, Steam Machines, Steam Controller, In-Home Streaming), he was there to discuss things other than games. He actually started the thread to talk about his campaign to raise money for the Seattle Children's Hospital through a charity car racing event. If donations reach $500,000, Newell will host an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, where you can expect more answers about gaming.
