Oct 25, 2024 4:24 AM

The latest box office numbers are in, and Frozen 2 is unsurprisingly a huge success while the Charlie's Angels reboot continues to slide after its bad start.

Frozen 2 opened in the US and Canada to a gargantuan $127 million, which makes it among the biggest openings in in history for an animated movie. Worldwide, the movie made $350 million after its first weekend, according to Deadline.

Now Playing: Frozen 2 - Official Trailer

Disney film executive Cathleen Taff said in a statement that the company is "thrilled" with Frozen 2's opening. "It's not easy to follow up the original Frozen," Taff said.

Taff added that Disney is "cautiously optimistic" that Frozen 2 will continue to perform well into Week 2 and beyond. The movie doesn't have much competition in the family film genre until Jumanji: The Next Level comes to theatres in mid-December.

The 2013 original Frozen made $1.27 billion at the global box office, and it'll be interesting to see how the sequel compares in theatres when all is said and done. The movie made songs like "Let It Go" and "Do You Want To Build A Snowman?" inescapably popular, but so far the tunes of the sequel haven't lit the world on fire in the same way.

Another new release this weekend was the Fred Rogers movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood starring Tom Hanks, which made $13.5 million. The new Chadwick Boseman movie, 21 Bridges, also opened this weekend and made $9.3 million.

In other box office news, the Charlie's Angels reboot continues to perform poorly after its slow start. It made another $3.2 million in the US/Canada this weekend to push its total to just $13.9 million after a weak $8.35 million opening weekend. The movie is performing better internationally, with $43.5 million in total box office receipts.

Elizabeth Banks--who wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the movie--commented on the film's failure on Twitter. Despite the underperformance at the box office, Banks said she is proud of the film and "happy it's in the world."

Also notable is that Joker stayed in the Top 10 with a further $3 million to push its total domestic haul to more than $326 million. Globally, the movie has made $1.035 billion.

Well, if you’re going to have a flop, make sure your name is on it at least 4x. I’m proud of #CharliesAngels and happy it’s in the world.
