Forsaken Demo Arrives
Forsaken Demo Arrives-October 2024
Oct 18, 2024 2:25 PM

Since Acclaim showed off this Descent-like title here at GameSpot a couple of months ago, editors have been looking forward to seeing the depth of graphics available in the game.

The demo is 3D accelerator-only through DirectX 3D (the full version will support non-3D accelerator cards although you won't get anywhere close to what the game looks like on an accelerator).

The demo includes two single-player levels with one deathmatch level that will support up to four players over an IPX, TCP/IP, modem, or serial connection.

You'll need DirectX 5.0 to run this, and if you find that you can't run the multiplayer portion of the demo, you'll need to go up to the official Forsaken web site to download the latest Microsoft DirectPlay 5.0a executable (since it isn't included in the DirectX 5.0 files).

On to gameplay: Forsaken's feel definitely is much like Descent – you have 360 degrees of freedom and spinning can make you a little dizzy (although you're inside a hovering cycle instead of a spacecraft).

One of the things that sets Forsaken apart from Descent though is the lighting - you've never played a game (or at least seen a demo) with lighting like this.

GameSpot editors looked at this title through a Canopus Pure3D card and the game's lighting effects running at 60fps at times make you feel like you've been trapped in a new release in the Star Wars series.

Weapons take on a whole new meaning and even in the normal mode of play enemies are sneaky, stealthlike, and hard to kill - these aren't the one-shot and take-down enemies that you'd expect in a demo.

Tanks shoot multiple rockets that shoot at different angles, homing photons fly and hit you when you turn your back, arcs of emerald ricochet off the walls like rubber boomerangs - the action comes fast and furious.

By the way, if you don't have one of these chipsets, Acclaim cannot guarantee that the demo will work: · 3DFX chipsets all board manufacturers · Voodoo Rush · Rendition Verite 1000, 2100, 2200 · Cirrus Logic · Nvidia Riva 128 chipset all board manufacturers · NEC Power VR for Final Release · S3 Virge · Trident · Permedia 1 and 2 · ATI Rage Pro · Number Nine Revolution · Matrox
