First Word on WCW Mayhem
First Word on WCW Mayhem-April 2024
Apr 29, 2025 4:13 PM

Electronic Arts officially announced its first wrestling game using the WCW (World Championship Wrestling) license on Thursday. Titled WCW Mayhem, the game will release for the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 this fall by developer Kodiak Interactive.

Basic information provided by Electronic Arts indicates more than 60 WCW wrestlers will be present in the game, each with their own signature moves and stunts. Wrestlers confirmed so far include "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan, Diamond Dallas Page, Sting, Kevin "Big Sexy" Nash, Goldberg, Konnan, and Bam Bam Bigelow. One of the most noteworthy features of the title is that the brawling won't be confined to the ring. In fact, players will be able to wrestle backstage, in dressing rooms and garage areas, hallways, and more.

We were able to attend a motion capture session up at EA's Burnaby, British Columbia, studios on Thursday. Staff member Ryan Mac Donald reported that the day began with an example of the motion capturing process with Bam Bam Bigelow and the Sergeant from the Power Plant (where the WCW wrestlers are trained). From there, Goldberg and Konnan came in and the four fought. Goldberg stole the show by tossing one of the other wrestlers through a wall.

After the demonstration EA brought in the production team for a question and answer session. While many details regarding the title are still unannounced (wrestling fans: please don't e-mail, we'll tell you everything we know as soon as we know it), we learned that:

  - The PlayStation and Nintendo 64 versions will be roughly the same, although the PlayStation will benefit from copious amounts of FMV. Both will support four-player simultaneous play.- EA has licensed a total of 130 WCW wrestlers. There will likely not be that many in the game though.- There will be over 600 moves in all.- Storyline and plot modes will be present in the game.- The developers feel that the Mayhem will be much more impressive than any other wrestling game seen so far and that it'll really deliver the feel of wrestling. - The developers have spent a lot of time with the WCW learning the life and appear to have a great deal of enthusiasm about the project.- The game won't be coming to the Dreamcast, but a PC version may be developed.

WCW Mayhem will be seen for the first time at this year's E3 convention in May, and other game features will be made known then as well.

Readers will recall the WCW license was previously with THQ. Before that licensing agreement expired at the end of 1998, Electronic Arts outbid THQ and secured the WCW license.
