A new item has been spotted glimmering in the undergrowths of the League of Legends Public Beta Environment. Junglers of the game are about to get a bit of extra love in the form of an upgrade path for the often overlooked Wriggle's Lantern.
The Lantern has significant history with the game's competitive scene. Named by former Riot designer Shurelya after a character in the Touhou franchise, Wriggle's Lantern was a one-slot powerhouse back in Season 2. It did pretty much everything; provided armor, damage, life steal, and even a free ward. Not only did it become a core item for an AD carry's laning phase, but it was at one point commonly considered necessary for a team to have three of them in order to have any chance at controlling the map, with both top laners and junglers pitching in.
Subsequent nerfs and game rebalances rendered it an extremely niche item, to the point where it's notable if it shows up in an inventory at all. The utility offered by the Spirit Stone build paths have almost eclipsed it entirely – a situation that Feral Flame is intended to fix. Fnatic and Coast junglers Lauri "Cyanide" Happonen and Joshua "NintendudeX" Atkins weigh in on the new tool.
"The item still encounters the same problem Wriggle has; not really useful stats and gold gain is meh as you have to farm a lot to get the full effectiveness. But the new passive on Maim might just be strong enough to cover for it."
NintendudeX: "Well, the thing about Feral Flame that sticks out to me is the fact that it is cheaper than Spirit Stone items, but has the potential to be stronger than them (since the Feral Flame passive scales off camps infinitely, in theory). However, a lot of junglers won't want to stick in the jungle to get the 25 large monsters killed part, and getting to Feral Flame specifically seems to be the pay-off. Just having the new Wriggle's Lantern is still pretty weak, albeit stronger than what it is now."
"So, in my opinion, this item will favor more single-target fast-clear junglers who haven't been able to make much use of the Spirit items – Nocturne is the first thing that comes to mind. Not necessarily single-target fast-clear junglers, but non-spell reliant."
"All in all, I think it's a step in the right direction for bringing back Wriggle's, but it has the potential to be too damn good on certain junglers to the point where it shakes up the meta of jungle picks at the moment. So I hope when they do release Feral Flame, it's more on the weak side."
