Psygnosis has always been one of those companies to embrace technology before anyone else. Well, the company has added another first with the release of its DVD game, Lander. Sure, Wing Commander 4 may have been one of the first to incorporate many DVD features, Lander was built from the ground up for the medium. While the company will offer both DVD and CD-ROM discs in the same package for those who don't have DVD drives yet, the DVD version offers full Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and MPEG-2 cutscenes. The CD-ROM version only offers Dolby Surround and MPEG-1 cutscenes.
The game is set circa 3032, and you pilot a jet-powered craft through space as you seek your fortune. How? You're hired to explore deep space when you find an extraterrestrial object with origins outside the known universe. Suddenly, several large corporations attempt to stop you before you discover the object's secret. Your goals is to navigate your lander (one of four) through 30 missions set in caverns, on land, and in space.
Lander also offers multiplayer modes for up to eight players over a LAN or Internet connection. And sticking to its DVD roots, the disc will also play its movies and music on any standard DVD player.
