ESA posts research update-October 2024
Oct 21, 2024 4:35 AM

The ESA (Entertainment Software Association, formerly the Interactive Digital Software Association) recently posted a summary of current game-related academic research at its Web site, theESA.com. Summaries on recent topics include the effects of games on socialization, child development, visual skills, pain management, education, and violence.

Today, the ESA revealed the results of a recent poll by Peter D. Hart Research Associates, which focuses on the gender, age, and certain socio-economic details of today's game consumer.

According to the data, 17 percent of players are over the age of 50, up from 13 percent in 2000. Women aged 18 and up make up a larger percentage of the gaming population, 26 percent, than boys aged 6 to 17, at 21 percent. Men aged 18 and over make up 38 percent of all gamers (the largest group), while girls aged 6 to 17 account for 12 percent. The study also found that the average age of gamers is 29 and that they play an average of 6.5 hours a week.
