The virtual cast reunion has been one of 2020's few enjoyable developments, as the stars of a variety of popular movies have reconvened online to discuss the films and take part in virtual script readings. Highlights have included reunions for Lord of the Rings, Back to the Future, and The Goonies, and those films will soon be joined by the seasonal favorite Elf.
The Elf cast reunion and live table read is set to take place on December 13 and will feature numerous stars of the 2003 holiday hit. Star Will Ferrell, who played Buddy the Elf, will be joined by co-stars Zooey Deschanel, Bob Newhart, Edward Asner, Mary Steenburgen, Amy Sedaris, Andy Richter, Kyle Gass, Danny Woodburn, and Matt Walsh. There will also be appearances from some people who didn't appear in the movie, including John Lithgow, Ed Helms, Busy Phillips, and podcaster Jon Favreau (not to be confused with the movie's director of the same name).

The reunion is to raise funds and awareness for the Democratic Senate candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in Georgia's upcoming Senate runoff elections. In a statement, Ferrell said, "I'm excited to bring Buddy back to the small screen to benefit the critical Senate runoff elections in Georgia. We need new leadership in the U.S. Senate, and I'm hoping that Buddy and the rest of the Elf cast, can play a small role in delivering that change."
Deschanel, who played Jovie in the movie, also tweeted her excitement about reuniting with the Elf cast, stating that she was in danger of exploding "into a burst of snowflakes."
The continued appeal of Elf was also shown this week when a man dressed up as Buddy to meet his biological father for the first time--just like in the movie. However, hopes for an Elf sequel remain slim. In September, James Caan, who plays Buddy's dad in the film, stated that a follow-up never happened because Ferrell and Favreau didn't get on.
