EA Shutting Down Its League of Legends, DOTA 2 Competitor Dawngate
EA Shutting Down Its League of Legends, DOTA 2 Competitor Dawngate-October 2024

Electronic Arts announced today that it is ending development on its free-to-play PC MOBA, Dawngate. The game was in development at Waystone Games.

"Today, I have the unenviable task of announcing that we've decided to stop development of Dawngate," Waystone Games general manager Matthew Bromberg said in a statement.

"I know this is disappointing news for our community, which has been so supportive and loyal," he added. "To all of you who have graciously given us your time and valuable feedback during our beta period, we’d first like to thank you."

Bromberg said Dawngate was a game that was not simply "a clone" of existing MOBA games, but rather one that "truly pushed the genre forward in many ways."

So why shut Dawngate down? Bromberg said though the game grew over the course of its 18-month beta period, "we're not seeing the progress we'd hoped for."

"This isn't the outcome we wanted, but beta testing is about learning and improving, and ultimately, about making difficult decisions about how to proceed," he said.

Dawngate will continue to run for the next 90 days. In addition, if you spent any money on the game during the beta, you can get a full refund.

"On behalf of the entire team at Waystone Games and EA, I want once again to thank all our players for being part of this journey," Bromberg said. "Your straight-up feedback and the friendly reception we received all over the world at events was extremely encouraging and important to us. We appreciate it."

Dawngate aimed to separate itself from the likes of League of Legends and DOTA 2 by allowing you to choose a role that isn't specifically dependent on the character you select. This is all in the way of "celebrating personal play styles," EA said previously.

Dawngate entered open beta in April 2014. It is unclear if there will be any layoffs at Waystone Games as a result of the game's closure.
