E3 2019: PES 2020 Announced, Release Date Confirmed For PS4, Xbox One, PC-October 2024
Oct 23, 2024 1:31 AM

Konami has revealed this year's soccer sim, and it has a new naming convention. It's officially titled eFootball: PES 2020, and it's coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on September 10.

This year's game will feature a revamped Master League, Konami says, "headlined by a powerful new interactive dialogue system that puts the reins firmly in players hands when it comes to controlling story progression." The publisher also says transfer fees and salaries will be more realistic. Master League will allow you to create your own manager avatar--or use one of "several legendary managers," such as Johan Cruyff or Diego Maradona.

PES 2020 will also contain a new mode named Matchday, which contains weekly events where each real-world player picks one of two teams and each match you play contributes to your team's cumulative score. At the end of the season, the best performing user from each team will face off to decide the overall winner.

Konami lists further gameplay improvements as "upgraded trapping mechanics and new techniques; context-sensitive kick accuracy; more realistic defense and the addition of the intentional foul; an adaptive player interaction system that recreates player personalities on the pitch; and much more." Visually, there will be a new camera option, improved player models, an enhanced lighting engine, and more realistic cutscenes and replays.

Lionel Messi will be on the game's standard cover, while Ronaldinho is the cover star of the Legend Edition. The club both players are most readily associated with, Barcelona, is once again officially licensed in this year's PES. The club and Konami have signed a new "multi-year global partnership," the publisher has said, which once again keeps Barcelona and its Camp Nou stadium exclusive to PES.

PES's main rival, FIFA, saw its new edition revealed at E3 2019 as well. FIFA 20's release date also falls in September, around two weeks after PES's. The game includes a FIFA Street-like Volta Mode, but that won't be on the Switch version, which doesn't come with "any of the big new features."
