Dying Light 2 Community Is Angry at the New Microtransactions; Techland Responds-November 2024
Nov 29, 2024 12:41 AM

While Dying Light 2 originally came out over a year and a half ago, Techland has continuously updated the game with many free updates, including some major ones that improved parkour, combat, and the night experience, among many other aspects.

The latest patch, called Summertime, dropped late last week, delivering a crossover event with Payday 2, in-game integration for Mod.io community maps on consoles and Steam Deck, new knife animations, the ability to skip the Prologue, an optional in-game modifier called Alterations, the ability to set the level of gore with the new Brutality setting, and lots of fixes.

However, by far the most controversial addition was Dying Light Points, a new form of in-game microtransactions. Techland did provide 500 complimentary Dying Light Points that can be redeemed by October 7th through the in-game store. Still, the DL Points caused quite an uproar within the Dying Light 2 community. Aside from the obvious and everpresent distaste for any form of microtransactions, there's also the fact that bundle prices are currently structured in a way that could conceivably leave players with unspent Dying Light Points after they have purchased something.

The developer quickly noticed this concern and replied with the following tweet:

As always, we are gathering your feedback and hear your concerns. As far as we understand, a big part of the frustration stems from the pricing of the bundles and the resulting leftover DL Points.

To figure out this issue, we’ve already started working on a couple of solutions proposed by the community. For example, we’re reviewing the mechanics of adding an option to purchase individual items from the existing bundles. This way, if you have any spare DL Points, you could spend them on different bundles. Why not use Michonne's Katana while cosplaying a chicken? Still, that will not happen overnight, as it’ll take the devs some time to rework the system.

Meanwhile, as a reminder, there are several bundles in the store that can be bought for less than 500 DL Points that you can grab now – or you can wait until we implement the solution suggested above.

The Dying Light 2 studio also promised an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session with Franchise Director Tymon Smektala, where presumably the developer will relay some news to resolve the community's concerns on DL Points.

As a reminder, Techland delayed the second Dying Light 2 DLC to 2024.
