Hi-Val Inc. announced that it plans to ship its first DVD-RAM upgrade kits at the end of April.
The first kit will include a 2X DVD-RAM drive with special playback and recording software so you can copy data onto new writeable DVD-ROM disks. A second kit will ship sometime after the first with a wireless option that allows movies to be played on a TV placed no more than 300 feet away from the PC. Pricing for the two kits will be in the US$399 to $599 range.
These new drives will allow users to record data on DVD-ROMs, play DVD movies - and read standard CDs, CD-R (recordable discs), and CD-RWs (rewriteable discs).
The new technology has some slight limitations, however. The drive cannot write on to CD-Rs or CD-RWs, and it cannot copy DVD-ROM movies because of the potential copyright infringement problems.
Pricing for the disks will be $24.95 for a 2.6GB disk and $44.95 for a 5.2GB disk.
