Nov 1, 2024 8:24 PM

The past week saw the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (iGEA) announce a 16 percent drop in game sales in Australia, as well as both Microsoft and Sony coming out to talk about their 2010 results.

Now it's Nintendo's turn, which, for the fifth year in a row, has claimed the coveted title of top-selling console in Australia with the Nintendo DS. Throughout the course of 2010, 520,000 Nintendo DS consoles were sold, bringing the total install base of the popular handheld to over 3 million units. The previous holder of this title was the PlayStation 2, which has over 2.6 million consoles in Australian households. All the sales data has been provided by industry trackers GfK Australia.

The Nintendo DS is officially the most popular console in Australia.

In the home console arena, the Wii also had a successful year surpassing the 2 million units sold mark in 2010. This milestone was achieved in 47 months, making the Wii the fastest selling console to 2 million. In total, 420,000 Wii consoles were sold throughout last year.

When it comes to overall sales, 58 percent of all consoles sold last year were either a Wii or Nintendo DS. As for software, 47 percent of all software sold in 2010 was for a Nintendo platform.
