Last week DreamHack and partner MTG announced they would be launching their new esports studio in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 20th. The partnership was formed in September last year, with the objective to create a global dedicated esports studio.
“MTGx is proud to announce that DreamHack TV6 Studio stands ready to host the best eSports tournaments, and to broadcast them globally on MTG´s channels around the clock", said Rikard Steiber at the time, Chief Digital Officer of Modern Times Group and CEO of MTG. "eSports is a growing market, and this initiative is an important step to make the best games and tournaments available to the eSports fans globally.”
The launch event will feature a SteelSeries CS:GO Invitational tournament with $10,000 on the line and some of the world's best Counter-Strike teams in attendance, including Ninjas in Pyjamas, Fnatic, Titan, and Dignitas. The invitational event is a follow-up to the action-packed $250,000 major tournament at DreamHack Winter, which saw Fnatic take down NiP in a historic finals, and CS:GO hit a break records in concurrent players on steam.
DreamHack Project Manager Fredrik 'ponderosa' Nyström says it was a no-brainer to have CS:GO in the studio first.
"We love Counter-Strike and been doing tournaments in the game since forever, so it's in our DNA to continue working with the game in all our projects", Nyström told onGamers. "The DreamHack SteelSeries Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Championship at DHW13 was a huge success and with the tv-series about NiP on TV6 plus EMS One Katowice in March, CSGO is in a really good place right now."
"Everybody wants to see Fnatic vs. NiP. Titan & Dignitas are two world class teams capable of beating any team out there, so we think its a really god mix of teams. Its really exciting and we are very happy to launch it with a bang with both the DreamHack SteelSeries CS:GO Invitational and ESPORTSM broadcasts the first weekend. The broadcast will be multi-language casting in Swedish and English."
Although no other games have yet been announced for the studio, DreamHack has featured a multitude of titles at their events across all genres, and currently features Dota 2 and StarCraft 2 as their biggest titles. Season 1 of the Dota 2 ASUS ROG DreamLeague begins on March 4th, with StarCraft 2 expected across DreamHack's 2014 tour stops. Nyström says that DreamHack will focus on the biggest games, but that all will be considered.

"At DreamHack we work with the most popular esports titles and it's natural that we are looking at formats and considering [Dota 2, StarCraft 2, and League of Legends]", he said. "We also look at other new games. Goat Simulator is one of them. We want to produce all from casual to pro esport formats. When it comes to choosing games it's always important that it's a popular game, but new games with new formats can and will be featured, maybe in cooperation with publishers, etc. So we are looking into having several formats in pre-production. The Valve games is huge for us and our costumers, but we have as before, a presence of all major games and publishers at DreamHack festivals and projects."
DreamHack has made strides for inclusion of all games at their events, including those publishers with prior conflicts in certain areas. DreamHack was the only major event in 2013 to hold concurrent tournaments for League of Legends, Dota 2, and Heroes of Newerth at the same event. Previous reports outlined exclusivity contracts between Riot and league organizers for the sole use of League of Legends as the MOBA/ARTS game at events, especially those with LCS teams in attendance.
With the World Cyber Games ceasing operations, DreamHack is now also the only major traditional-esports event organizer to gain approval from Capcom to run tournaments. Despite the differences, Nyström says they aren't too different than everyone else.
"I don't think our relationships with publishers, partners and sponsors are too different from other organizers", said Nyström. "We work on different levels with all our partners, some are exhibitors, esport sponsors, and some are both. In general the publishers' role in esports has changed a lot lately. Now most have an esports plan, supporting tournaments and organizers in different ways.We do all from BYOC tournaments very close to the community to launch events fully supported by publishers."
The whole scene and esport market evolves a lot and fast right now and I think we have a very flexible organisation that's close to both the community and the business side of things."
The SteelSeries CS:GO Invitational will broadcast on Friday, February 21st, and the ASUS ROG DreamLeague will begin on March 3rd.
