Sega's Bernie Stolar isn't saying anything about the Dreamcast in public, but he's saying a lot to retailers. Currently Sega's trying to rally retailers around the platform, showing it to the managers of Babbage's Etc. stores at a conference last week in Nashville, Tenn., for example. This is what Sega's saying - and showing - in private:
- Currently, there is no price determined for the US Dreamcast, but it will be competitive.- The release date is late summer/early fall (this is the first time Sega has said anything other than "fall").- LucasArts has a development station and will be developing games for it.- Sonic Adventure was shown running on an actual Dreamcast (one of five running systems in the world now).- They hinted at an exclusive version of Resident Evil.- The modem is built in to the system.
At the conference, Sega showed a video containing footage of several Dreamcast titles, including: World Series Baseball 2000, a football and basketball title; Virtua Fighter 3, the space shooter shown at E3; and a western adventure game with a character that resembled Woody from Toy Story (presumably from Infogrames).
Those who saw the presentation told us that all the games looked incredible. Sonic was most impressive, and Sega said that the game was only about half done. The sports titles were all in high res, with graphics above and beyond the quality of NFL Blitz in the arcades.
