TOKYO - Enix's seventh installment in the Dragon Quest series has been in the works for years, but finally it's seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. According to recent reports, the game will be officially announced for an August 26th release in Japan. Dragon Quest VII is, after Final Fantasy VIII, the most anticipated game of '99 in Japan, having even spawned a New Year's ad with anxious gamers praying for the game to arrive this year (as Enix has probably been doing itself).
A US release of Dragon Quest VII is inevitable, but as for when and who will publish, that still remains a mystery. But for the second most-anticipated game next to Final Fantasy VIII, it'll take a powerhouse company to give the game the kind of exposure it deserves. Once again, industry scuttlebutt says that Sony may be handling the game in North America, but that remains unconfirmed by the company.
