Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon series proved that animated dragon movies can be hugely successful, and now Disney is set to release its own contribution to the genre. Raya and the Last Dragon hits theaters in March, and the first trailer has been released.
The movie stars Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) as Raya, a girl living in a land named Kumandra. Many years earlier, dragons were worshipped by the people, but now only one remains. In the voiceover, Raya states that to restore peace amongst the divided population she must "find the last dragon," which will almost certainly involve a thrilling and spectacularly animated adventure. Check the trailer out below.
Raya and the Last Dragon also stars Awkwafina (Ocean's 8, The Farewell) as Rawa's sister Sisu. It's directed by Moana's Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, who previously helmed the acclaimed indie drama Blindspotting. It was originally scheduled for release next month, but will now arrive on March 12, 2021.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tran spoke about her character. "She is someone who is technically a princess but I think that what's really cool about this project, about this character, specifically is that everyone's trying to flip the narrative on what it means to be a princess," she said. "Raya is totally a warrior. When she was a kid, she was excited to get her sword. And she grows up to be a really badass, gritty warrior and can really take care of herself."
Disney will also be released the next Pixar movie next summer. The film is titled Luca, and it's set to hit theaters in July, with Up's Enrico Casarosa directing. In addition, the studio's Soul will skip theaters entirely and debut on Disney+ on December 25.
