Destiny 2: Faction Rallies Aren't Returning, But Their Gear Will-December 2024
Dec 14, 2024 5:00 AM

Trials of Osiris, one of Destiny 2's toughest events, is returning with the Season of the Worthy on March 10, but Bungie has confirmed another limited-time event isn't on its way back to the game. That event is its Faction Rally, in which players complete bounties for special gear related to Destiny 2's three in-game factions. We haven't seen much from Future War Cult, New Monarchy, or Dead Orbit in a while, but while the event isn't returning, the good news is, the loot will soon be making a return.

In another big Director's Cut blog post, Destiny 2 game director Luke Smith quickly mentioned a few big changes the developer is looking to make to the game going forward. One is an adjustment to how Destiny 2 handles seasonal content, although details on how seasons will change in the future haven't been hammered out yet. Another is a shift that might make some weapons obsolete in endgame content after a set period, a change that sounds a lot like going back to the days of Destiny 1. And an in a quick aside, Smith addressed Faction Rallies, which haven't appeared in the game since Destiny 2's first year. They won't be coming back anytime soon, Smith said.

"Lots of folks have been wondering if Faction Rallies will return," Smith wrote. "We have no plans to bring back Faction Rallies. The reward gear hasn’t been used that much, our character cast is growing too large, and crucially, they didn’t drive a bunch of engagement with the game."

Faction Rallies offered special loot based on Destiny 2's three in-game factions, Dead Orbit, Future War Cult, and New Monarchy. The loot will be available from other in-game activities, according to Smith.

"That said, there’s some sweet looks in that gear and we’re moving the Faction Rally armor to the Legendary engram reward pools in Season 10, alongside a few popular faction weapons," he wrote.

Bungie is also making a few other tweaks to the game. The free-to-play New Light version of Destiny 2 is getting a new introduction to ease new players into the game a little better, and Bungie is also going to stop making Bright Engrams available for sale. Before the release of Shadowkeep, Bright Engrams earned players random cosmetic items, many of which were available on the Eververse Store--in essence, they were loot boxes.

For the game's last two seasons, you could earn Bright Engrams either by leveling up your Seasonal rank or by purchase Bright Engrams from the Eververse Store with premium currency, but Smith said Bungie will stop offering them for sale.

"We want players to know what something costs before they buy it. Bright Engrams don’t live up to that principle so we will no longer be selling them on the Eververse Store, though they will still appear on the Free Track of the Season Pass."

Check out Smith's Director's Cut for more details about the changes coming in Destiny 2's future.
