Death Stranding can be confounding, even for those who have actually seen or played it. Game director Hideo Kojima says he knows at least one person who connected with its heady concepts instantly, though: film director George Miller. The director behind the Mad Max films is said to have immediately understood the idea, to the point that Kojima wishes he'd saved his reaction for posterity.
"There were some people [who understood right away]. Especially creators were quite quick to click," Kojima told Game Informer. "Like [director] George Miller, who is kind of my mentor--my god. In 2017, I went to Australia. I only had a trailer, and I also explained verbally to him. George Miller said, 'In all aspects, you are correct. Mathematically, psychologically, physically, philosophically.' He kind of started to draw a diagram, he has this theory, so he said, 'What you’re trying to do is correct.' I should have recorded that! I should have sent it to the staff! That was really a happy moment."

Kojima didn't detail what was on Miller's diagram, but it must have shown a keen understanding for Kojima's ideas. Miller is best known for writing and directing the Mad Max series, particularly the recent and acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road. Those films are similarly set in a bleak post-apocalypse.
