Dead Island sales have surpassed 2 million units globally, the parent company of publisher Deep Silver, Embracer Group, has revealed.
Embracer released its most recent financial results for Q4 of its current Fiscal Year (January 2023 through March 2023) today, and in it, the holding company reported strong initial sales of the long-overdue Dead Island sequel from developer Dambuster Studios. Last month, we already reported that the Zombie-slaying game sold over 1 million copies in just three days after launch.
Fast forward one monthDead Island sales have surpassed 2 million units globally, the parent company of publisher Deep Silver, Embracer Group, has revealed. and Embracer Group has now revealed that Dead Island 2 has sold "well over" 2 million copies of the game worldwide, thereby becoming the biggest launch ever for publishers Deep Silver and PLAION in both units and revenue - quite the achievement for the publishers considering the fact that the game's development has been in limbo for quite some time.
"Dambuster Studios and PLAION released Dead Island 2 on April 21, and it is encouraging to see the positive reception from both critics and players", the press release from Embracer Group reads. "Dead Island 2 sold 1 million units in its first weekend (21-23 April), exceeding management expectations. Measured over the first seven days of the sale period, it has become Deep Silver and PLAION’s biggest launch in history in both units and revenue. I am happy to state that the game has now reached a sell-out of well over 2 million units. It is rewarding to see that the decision to give the studio time to polish the game has paid off."
Dead Island 2 was released late last month for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. The game received an overall positive response, and in our review, we praised the game's characters, combat options, and its quest design.
"Games that go through development hell hardly turn out great, but Dambuster Studio proved with Dead Island 2 that this is not always the case, although the game is far from a masterpiece", we wrote in our review. "While the gameplay works and feels quite fun at the start of the game, things become repetitive very quickly due to the linearity of the experience and the shallowness of the combat system. Offering nothing more than some mindless fun, the game would have been more than fine if launched at a lower price, but at full price, Dead Island 2 doesn't offer that much to justify it."
