April 14, 2010 | Borderlands | Scalper | Jody Robinson | Smaller turn out than expected, but we did have a good amount of people drop by for various platforms. I might have nightmares of being killed in the game for being too low level to fight higher level enemies. Scalper and I wouldn't give up though! We really wanted to gather these crystals and did everything possible to turn that quest in. - Jody |
April 7, 2010 | Mario Kart Wii | waitaseck | Jody Robinson | waitaseck summed up this game night when he said "Awesome racing with not a dull moment! However those lightning bolts get quite annoying." |
March 31, 2010 | Bad Company 2 | steel2 | Chris Watters, Shaun McInnis, Brian Ekberg, Kevin VanOrd, Kim Cuartero, Randall Montanari | We had numerous Xbox 360 participants, and not too many PC and PS3 players. We only chose one MVP due to there being numerous players on this platform. Chris Watters shared his Xbox 360 highlights as follows. 1. Cruising around Panama Canal on an ATV, I saw some poor sucker crossing the road. Before he could make it to the safety of a building, I ran him down for a sweet road kill. My momentum carried me up a pile of rubble, and I'm thinkin', time for a sweet jump! Then I drilled into a busted car at the top of the heap, which exploded and sent my corpse hurtling through the air. Still kind of sweet, in that oh-crap-I'm-dead kind of way. 2. Anti-tank mines on Port Valdez. One of my favorite things! 3. Collecting dogtags from you folks, though the Et Tu Brute achievement still eludes me. 4. Warning my team of the enemy's (Shaun's) nefarious plan to "commit to excellence." |
March 17, 2010 | Quake Live | Legolas_Katarn | Jody Robinson | Madness cesspool that only a fast-paced shooter can grant, we played for quite a long time this night, and still wanted more! |
February 23, 2010 | MAG | cloudwarrior79 | Mark Walton, Guy Cocker, Alex Sasson Coby | GameSpot UK staff played against a variety of other GameSpotters who happen to be MAG fans. |

December 1, 2009 | Modern Warfare 2 | | The GameSpot UK staff had a wonderful turn out while the GameSpot US staff had a regular turnout. The GameSpot UK staff also tracked the player scores! !
November 10, 2009 | Forza Motorsport 3 | | All regions had a good enough turn even though it was the night Modern Warfare 2 was released. ImaginaryFriend and Gen_Warbuff received the Paintshop emblem! Roll call.
October 27, 2009 | Uncharted 2: Among Thieves | | We had a nice turn out. Chris Watters ended up stepping in for Thomas McShea, and Kevin played for a bit early on, Congrats to MrGanny! Roll call.
October 6, 2009 | Halo 3: ODST | | We had a nice turn out this week. Waterlord0 received the MVP for not only rocking at the game, he also brought about 4 of his friends into the game to own all of us staff. Good times had by all! Roll call.
September 29, 2009 | Battlefield Heroes | | We had a good turn out for our Battlefield Heroes game night, although we expected many more from the amount of people who said they would show. This game was packed with action, which makes it an ideal candidate for a future game night. This week's MVP was selected not only for having some nice skills in the game, he also helped many of the Battlefield Heroes newbies to get in the game. Roll call.
September 22, 2009 | Ghostbusters The Video Game | none | none | No staff participation happened for this event. Everyone who wanted to play dropped by the Game Night chatroom to get in matches with other GameSpotters. |
September 15, 2009 | Call of Duty World at War | | Decent turn out for a shooter Wii game! Read the dedicated discussion.
September 8, 2009 | Metal Gear Solid 4 | | For the amount of people who asked for this game, hardly anyone showed. The ones who did show happened to have problems with the patch or getting online to work. Lesson learned. Always get your PS3 game patches updated the day before.
September 1, 2009 | Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II | | Seems that some frequent game nighters dropped by the chatroom to chat about the Game Heroes feature voting! No matter, we did have a couple people show, but it wasn't a big turn out as we had hoped. carlosjuero stuck it out with a lot of patience and expertise with the game and was chosen as the MVP of the week! Roll call.
August 25, 2009 | Fat Princess | | Not the greatest of turn-out for PS3 players. We expected much more from having two PS3 games. Jody teamed up with snydertiger2003 while Justin teamed up with BenderUnit22. A few peeps showed a little late, but we all pretty got tired of playing the computer so we stopped earlier than planned. Maybe next time we'll have more people show to give us some better online competition! Roll call.
August 18, 2009 | QuakeLive | | We had a lot of people show tonight. Wolf-5 almost received the emblem for his pummel humiliations, but from getting owned 1v1 by lettuceman44 (well, up only by 3 frags) I went ahead and gave it to lettuce instead. Roll call.
August 11, 2009 | Gears of War 2 | | Non-stop action happened this week with Gears of War 2. We did a lot of voice chatting while playing the game so it was hilarious hearing everyone's reactions for both teams while playing the game. No secret missions could be shared! At one point I became the princess that everyone had to protect during the matches of Guardian mode. RealKilla_789 and Bigboss232 were pretty much coaching all of us to make us better players. Better watch your step if you run into them in the game! Read the report.
August 4, 2009 | Excitebots: Trick Racing | | We had a variety of people who dropped by the chatroom to chit-chat but some couldn't rent the game in time. We were quite surprised that the Mario Kart Wii crowd didn't show as this is one game that has this kind of atmosphere. Fun times! Now, if only I can make some time to unlock that hummingbird racebot. Read the report.
July 28, 2009 | Free Realms | | We had 2 hours full of racing action! Thanks for experimenting with the MMO's mini-games! Read the report.
July 21, 2009 | Battlefield 1943 | | Surprsing to find more PS3 folks instead of X360 folks this week. Justin and Chris played on the X360 while Jody played with the Playstation 3 tonight. Congrats to the MVPs per platform! Read the report.
July 14, 2009 | The Conduit | We had a great outcome tonight with plenty of Wii fans that stopped by to play the game. Due to Jody Robinson stinking at the Wii shooter game, anyone who recieved a higher score in the matches received the Bounty Hunter emblem. .Congrats! Visit the Roll call.
July 7, 2009 | Red Faction: Guerrilla | This week had a low turn out with the Xbox 360 players who stopped by and disappeared! Chris and Brian hunted for some servers and for the first time in game night history, a staff member received the bounty hunter emblem as the MVP for the Xbox 360 version. As for the PlayStation 3 crowd, the normal amount of players showed. dargondarkfire normally had the top score in majority of the games and was chosen as the MVP for the PlayStation 3.
June 16, 2009 | Team Fortress 2 | Mods hosted: | With JodyR out on vacation, the moderators took on all GameSpot users in Team Fortress 2. Sadly, Xbox 360 owners were not able to participate because Xbox Live was down for maintenance. Additionally, some of the mods who were going to host PS3 did not show so the following courageous users received the bounty hunter emblem for taking one of the mod team: ArmaghRovers, Fizzlesticks, BenderUnit22, and galerian86.
June 2 and June 9, 2009 | Announcement | none | Sorry for the late announcement. We won't be having game night on June 2nd or June 9th due to E3. Staff are catching up on tasks so there would be a low turn out, especially with all of you since you did not know what game we'll be playing. I planned to post a E3 activity for you all to participate in the Game Night Union to give you all something to do this week.
May 26, 2009 | UFC 2009 Undisputed | | With our biggest staff participation since last year's Grand Theft Auto 4 game night, participants who challenged staff received a participation emblem. We'll be sharing some footage of staff playing the game later down the road. In the meantime you'll want to check out the PS3 game night highlights.
May 19, 2009 | Counterstrike: Source | | Counterstrike: Source players dropped by to get in some action with Ryan MacDonald. The servers were a bit hard to get a hold of because everyone wanted to be on his team. Read the report.
May 12, 2009 | Killzone 2 | | Killzone 2 brought nearly 40 players to the chatroom. Majority of the players dropped by for the game, but a couple of them were found playing other PS3 games. We recorded some video footage of staff playing in game night that we'll sharelater down the road. Read the report.
May 5, 2009 | Mario Kart Wii | | Lots of speedracers attended the Mario Kart Wii game night. There were three users chosen as the MVP for completely owning Jody. Drop by the report thread for further details.
April 28, 2009 | Resident Evil 5 | | buieizhere was a newcomer to game nights. He happened to have some supenatural skills in the game. He owned everything in sight and received the bounty hunter emblem for wooping staff butts in versus mode. Read the report.
April 21, 2009 | Call of Duty World At War | | Slow week for game night participants. coolcats1 was the newcomer to the group and was a skilled player along with moroes. Those who showed up played some Zombie rounds and a few Team Deathmatch rounds.. Read the report.
April 14, 2009 | Street Fighter IV | | Ryan Mac Donald and Brendan Sinclair were the main staff that played. Jody Robinson, Lark Andersen, Stanley Lin also showed up to play in some of the matches. Xbox 360 fanatics soaked this game night up, but it seemed that there were only two participants that showed for the PlayStation 3. PS3 owners should be ashamed of themselves for not showing up to represent! Drop by the report thread for further details.
April 7, 2009 | Left 4 Dead | | With an estimate amount of 36 attendees plus their non-gamespot buddies, many believed community game night #68 was a success. Was it the celebration of games nights emblem or did everyone really want to play Left 4 Dead across the two platforms, Xbox 360 and PC? I'd like to think it was because of the idea that game nights were returning. Some users did ask where Kevin was, and others forgot about him. Drop by the report thread for further details.
February 2, 2009 | Announcement | none | GameSpot Game Night: We Need Your HelpHi all! You may have noticed in the last month that GameSpot Game Night hasn't taken the center stage it once did. This is due to staff cuts that have injured our ability to keep steady with this particular feature. But we feel strongly about Game Night and have every intention of continuing this cherished tradition. This is why we need the community's help. What I need is volunteers--folks who are willing to do any of the following tasks, and more:
What you do and how often is up to you, but with a few folks helping, we should be able to make game nights stronger than ever! If you are interested in giving the GameSpot team a hand, send me an email. Let me know what you are willing to do, and any other pertinent information. I would need your real name and your GameSpot username as well. My email is: [email protected]. Once Jody Robinson and I are able to put together a plan, we will be in contact with respondents to put together the next steps. I look forward to joining forces with our best community members to make Game Night stronger than ever!.
December 2, 2009 | Left 4 Dead | Left 4 Dead is an absolute blast, not that it comes as a surprise to fans. Kevin and a healthy group of GameSpotters took on the zombie apocalypse as only GameSpotters can: with hunting rifles and expletives. Our thanks to everyone who showed up, and may you live long enough to make it to the escape helicopter. |

November 18, 2008 | Gears of War 2 | None chosen | Aaron covered Gears of War 2 night, but he is out for the week, so I don't have a good update on how it was for the most part. However, i did play one round, and all of the community members that joined us reminded me what a great gaggle of users we have in our forums, and reading the site. Thanks to everyone, and as soon as I have an update on an MVP, I will update. W00t!
November 11, 2008 | Resistance 2 | Resistance 2 is simple awesome, or at least, the co-op part is. I am now officially addicted to the special ops class, which is just a constant supply of action and support, and always a treat. My many thanks to those that joined, and I can't wait to join you again in the near future!
November 4, 2008 | Red Alert 3 | It's always tough playing an awesome player, but lim_ak schooled all of us, no matter which faction he chose. He definitely deserves the emblem, but a good time was had by all. We took to the air, swam out to sea, and rolled across the land, all in the name of getting a glimpse of Jenny McCarthy. A worthwhile goal.
October 28, 2008 | SOCOM: Confrontation | In SOCOM, the more the merrier. We had a great time, but it could have been even merrier with more folks! We definitely appreciate when PlayStation 3 owners want their own Game Nights, but you need to show up when we have them or there is no reason to. That said, Marksman2200 gets special credit for showing us how it's done. We look forward to seeing more folks in future PS3 nights!
October 21, 2008 | Age of Booty | It was the Age… the Age of Boo-tay! Ugh, I can't believe I just wrote that. In any case, it was actually a lot of fun playing with the GS folks. It's simple, sure, but ganging up on Jody Robinson was just a blast, although she did dress me down later. In any case, thanks to all who joined--especially those who didn't shiver my timbers or don an eye patch.
October 14, 2008 | Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis | Those that joined enjoyed an immense opportunity for rallying, accumulating online play time, and the exclusive opportunity to play one of Rockstar’s most accessible games. Liu Ping was a force to be reckoned with, but ultimately the GameSpot staff served up some serious table tennis lessons. No question about who on that night: the GameSpot users who attended!
October 07, 2008 | NHL 09 | The GameSpot Orangemen roared to a 3-1 start in the EA Sports Online Hockey League, the closest thing yet to a sports MMO. Rossuron came through with a few clutch goals (assists from king of Canadian mullets Jon Miller), and Xtreme CT did an admirable job in the net as a user goalie, allowing only a single lamp-lighter. If you’re a hockey fan and missed out on the glory, check out the official GameSpot EASHL team, the Xnmnk Mockobars. See you next week!
September 30, 2008 | Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting | None chosen | GameSpot's first game night held live at CBS Interactive headquarters was a sight worth seeing! Blanca stopped by (well, in a costume) and there were some other people dressed up as famous Street Fighter characters. We plan to release some footage of the live event in the coming weeks. Everyone that attended the event in person received a miniature Chun Li figurine. Heck, some of the community game night members that played online also received a Chun Li figurine. We hope to have another live event similar to this one in the future.
September 23, 2008 | Crysis Warhead | Crysis Warhead is a lot of fun to play, even if snipers still rule the roost on all the old maps. Darn headshots! Regardless, we had a great time, and while a small-ish group of GSers showed up, the map soon filled up with other folks, making for a fun time. Special thanks to The_Diversion, for killing far more often than any other player. Way to go!
September 9, 2008 | Burnout Paradise | It's all about the crashes and the smashes and the badonkadonk. So we took part in freeburn challenges, raced, crashed, and otherwise had an insanely joyous time. Thanks to Don Francis for joining in, and to all the drivers who showed up and ganged up on me. It was a blast!
September 2, 2008 | Company of Heroes | TBD | Patching issues galore! I wasn't able to join the fun, so I am grateful for the players the carried the torch for me! I got a replay sent to me but I haven't had a chance to look yet. When I do, I will post some footage, and announce an MVP!
August 19, 2008 | Soulcalibur IV | Fighting games are as foreign to me as elk meat or yeti cheese, so I didn't expect to do well playing Soulcalibur IV. But I had a good time, and that is what really matters, right? I did get my ass kicked though, which may have delighted my opponents, who rolled over me like a tractor trailer over cookie dough.
August 12, 2008 | Super Smash Bros. Brawl | I am no Smash Bros. Expert, but somehow I (good old KVO) managed to kick major ass in our latest GameSpot Game Night. Now, I know that I shouldn't spam Kirby's down-B, but I did just a tad. But not the whole time, and I was pleased that I mixed things up as well as I did. My nemesis, though, was Mr. Game & Watch, the one guy that would consistently deliver the beatdown. Way to go, remmbermytitans: you earned that emblem!
July 29, 2008 | Forza 2 | None chosen | For a last-minute game choice, Forza 2 night went awfully well, though I can't pretend to be a driving game expert by any means. I surprisingly held my own though! Check out some
July 22, 2008 | Day of Defeat: Source | This game night was a lot of fun, though we did play on some funky maps. One had all this weird fog in random areas, was too wide open, was terribly unbalanced (assault class was totally useless), spawned you in the middle of the field--it didn't even have flags, which means creating it for Day of Defeat made no sense. Luckily, the people that showed up were awesome, and the official maps rocked to high heaven. Check out some
July 8, 2008 | Battlefield: Bad Company | Poor Shaun lost his connection in the PS3 match, but that's ok, since the 360 match was also a ton of explosive fun. I hadn't played Bad Company before that, but it felt very much like a Battlefield game, and the action simply never stopped. It was like slamming 10 Red Bulls in a row. Boosh!
July 1, 2008 | Crysis | Not a whole lot of GameSpotters showed up, but that's ok, because the match filled up quickly with other players. I had played Crysis, but not online, so it took some getting used to. I was surprised at how enjoyable it was, and my newly built rig was quite up to the task of keeping things moving smoothly. PC games 4EVA!
June 24, 2008 | GRID | We had a great time zooming around tracks from all around the world. Bumpers were bashed, cars were wrecked, and the GameSpot staff proved to be a formidable presence by driving backwards around some of the toughest tracks in the game. While we don’t have footage to share, if you imagined us having a lot of fun, you’d be right. Thanks to all who showed up.
June 17, 2008 | Metal Gear Online | It's no secret: I adore Metal Gear Solid 4. Game Night ended up being all sorts of awesome fun, thanks to the ease with which you can set up a series of matches in different modes. My only regret was that I was never chosen as Snake in the sneaking matches--and that I don't have any footage to share. However, we will do another MGO night soon, and I will be sure to show you highlights!
June 10, 2008 | Halo 3 | Halo 3 is loads of fun--no surprise there. My favorite part of the night was playing slayer on a small map with just rocket launchers. Brutal! My thanks to Don Francis for hosting a second game, and to all the players that showed up. I love King of the Hill. Just love it. Love love love.
June 3, 2008 | Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures | This is the second time we have played an MMO for game night, the other being World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade. We didn't accomplish much, because we went into an epic instance, where the monsters take longer to kill, so the two hours went by in a flash! We did have plenty of fun killing crocodiles, however, and it was fun returning to the Conqueror I created for the AoC marathon. Check out some
May 27, 2008 | Haze | I have long known that even average or mediocre games can be awesome when you play them online with awesome people. Such was the case with Haze. I must admit, however, that part of my joy came from hearing Shaun, who sits in the cubicle next to me, boast about his knife kills. He also coined the term "nectar sac," though I prefer not to think too much about what that actually means. Check out some
May 20, 2008 | Team Fortress 2 | Alas, the server I was offered for the PC part of Team Fortress 2 was all jacked up, so a few users high-tailed it out when the lag got bad, and the rest switched to a buttery smooth server. My apologies to those folks--that's not exactly what I intended. To make it up to you I am going to schedule another TF2 night for you guys soon, and I will get a server that is in better shape. The game is too good to let it lag! The 360 folks had fewer issues, so I recommend checking out some
May 13, 2008 | Mario Kart Wii | Mario Kart introduced me to more thrills and spills than I was expecting. Personal highlights include falls from the Rainbow Road, wrecks in Wario’s Gold Mine, and a lot of ding-a-ling sound effects. We did more than race, though, and I found I did far better at balloon battle than anything else. After all, I am a deathmatch lover at heart. But put to the mercy of my talented friends in the GameSpot community, I had no chance in Hades! Check
May 6, 2008 | Grand Theft Auto IV | Our second week of Grand Theft Auto IV included more thrills and spills, and featured more GameSpot editors online at once than you could shake a stick at. We played Mafiya Work, Cops & Crooks, and a lot more. I also watched as Shaun, Chris and Lark tried to conduct knife fights, only to have Justin disrupt the melee with a well-placed shotgun blast. In the meanwhile over on the PS3, I was disrupting my competitors by running over them in an ambulance or splashing them with a high-pressure spray from a fire engine. Good time. Good times.
April 8, 2008 | Super Smash Bros. Brawl | On April 8th, we played our first Wii game for GameSpot Game Night: Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I’ve never actually played a SSB game before, so I felt pretty intimidated by our users, who wiped the floor with me and my Kirby anvil spamming. Fortunately, Smash Bros. expert Lark Anderson joined in, so at least there was someone else on staff with skillz. Fighting games have never been my thing, and there's a very good chance you will never see me review one on GameSpot. On the other hand, Brawl is obviously a special game, and I had all sorts of crazy fun. We also had multiple emblem winners: _olimar, Lunar52, and timinator18. For proof of how crazy-awesome these nights can be, |

December 18, 2007 | Team Fortress 2 | None mentioned | Don Francis | Just before the Christmas Break, Don Francis decides that we should have one more game night before the end of the year, hosting our #23 GameSpot U.S. game night. Discussion |
December 11, 2007 | Call of Duty 4 | None mentioned | Kevin Van Ord, Shaun McInnis | Hexogen reported "I had an awesome time tonight. I got my ass handed to me in almost every game, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't the best time I've had playing COD4 online so far. Headquarters on Shipment was insane! I swear I died at least 20 times from grenades alone. Headquarters on Vacant was pretty hectic too. This was actually my first community game night, and hopefully it won't be my last." Discussion. |
October 18, 2007 | Halo 3 | n/a | Laura Jenner, Alex Coby | Alex Sasoon Coby reported "Well done, all those of you who killed me… which I think was all of you. It was lots of fun. "Discussion. |
October 17, 2007 | World in Conflict | Dirk13 | Kevin Van Ord | Dirk 13 reported "Yeah, am i the first "Double Bounty" winner It's too bad it's hard to tell which is me in the video, since the one big thing i did (game ending nuke) is not featured.." |
October 3, 2007 | Halo 3 | Elkoman and Zuul13 | Jason Ocampo, Kevin Van Ord | Game Night #20. Kevin reported "I confess that last night was the first time I had played Halo 3, unless you count the tiny bit of time I spent with the multiplayer beta earlier this year. My first personal gaming priority is to finish Bioshock, and I want to spend more time with skate, so Halo 3 is going on the back-burner. All of my gaming time--even my free time--is spent with games for work, and because I am the resident RPG player, I get all these long-ass games that take a lot of time. It's sad, too, because I can spend 50 hours on a game, but it won't necessarily make for a longer review than games that take 10 hours to complete, so I always have this feeling that my output lags behind my fellow editors. I keep begging Alex to give me something short and light. Too bad the short, light stuff I get invariably sucks. In any case, my personal gaming time is incredibly limited, so I only have time for a single game at a time, and it will take me weeks to finish a 15-hour game at this point. But back to the story at hand. We had a lot of fun at GameSpot Game Night on Wednesday. I am a big fan of major chaos in shooters, so for the first game, we player king of the hill, only I set gravity to 50%, and the hill to move randomly every 15 seconds. It was insane. For me, in the good way, though a few folks thought I must have been smoking something. I did learn a few things, though: 1. Jason Ocampo is excitable. During a bombing run match, Jason was the most vocal member of the team, screaming out the bomb location, calling for us to defend the bomb, and generally lifting adrenaline levels to the extreme. It was pretty awesome, and makes me want to play with Jason more often. 2. My brother is a great Halo player. I was so excited: My half-brother Andrew joined us last night. Now, I've never met Andy, or my real dad for that matter, but Andy and I have been talking for close to a year now. I hope to get him out here soon though for a visit. In any case, it's freaky how much he sounds like me, looks like me, acts like me. Well, he's a better Halo player than I am, but I am 14 years older, so I'll use that as an excuse. In any case, his gamertag is reign416. Send him an invite and chat him up. Tell him Kevin sent ya. ". Discussion. |

Sept 11, 2007 | The Darkness | n/a | Kevin Van Ord | kevb84 reported "Wow now that was a fun Game Night. The first few matches got pretty intense but once we did the Darklings vs the last human matches it got really fun. That last match was great once we figured out Darklings can walk on walls and ceilings o and the noises they make when jumping Hey Shot One Bullit you and me were going back and forth on a bunch of matches for a while. Great game night Kevin yea the lag was a bummer but we still all had fun thanks again for putting this together this week. O and after the last match I had a dirty disc error(odd it happens only with this game and the disc is clean too) I got kicked right after. Good times everyone we had some great matches tonight." Game Night #17 Discussion. |
Aug 14, 2007 | World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade | n/a | Kevin Van Ord | It was exciting to finally play something cooperatively, rather than competitively. Everyone was in good spirits, and we had a wonderful time. Some of us went off to raid, while others like myself quested and leveled. Early questing doesn't make for great video, but take a peek anyway: Game Night #16 Discussion. |
Aug 7, 2007 | Uno | n/a | Aaron Thomas | As I played Aaron's girlfriend until the big cheese showed, then we played a game with him. I didn't get to play Kevin… But I won the second game with you edubuccaneer (against Aaron), and I also won the game I played with whoever was using GSadmin3. Come on Bounty Hunter Emblem!! Game Night #15 Discussion. |
July 25, 2007 | Gears of War | MVP Dave_petrucci | Kevin Van Ord | GameSpot Game Night is always a great time, but I had a particularly good time last night playing Gears of War with a bunch of GameSpot community members and Alex Navarro. What makes these nights most awesome is how we can game for fun. I don't need to worry about a bunch of homophobic, racist 13-year-olds ruining the experience--and face it: playing Gears or Halo 2 online brings its fair share of characters well worth forgetting. If you're tired of playing online with horrible personalities and wish it was just about having a good time with buddies, you should join us every Wednesday evening. What did I learn this week? 1. Gears of War is awesome. That's not actually big news, but the online experience is diminished significantly by its crazed competitive community. When the game gets to shine, unfettered by nasty players, you can see how truly groundbreaking it is. It was our 2006 Game of the Year for good reason, and it is still, in my opinion, the finest looking console game to have yet hit store shelves. 2. Chainsaws rule. It has the same effect as Resident Evil 4 on me: I hear someone revving it up, and my heart drops to the bottom of my feet. So take a look, already! April 11, 2007 | Unreal Tournament 2004 | DJ_Lae, Sandylynx9 | Kevin, Jody, Greg, Jason | Tonight we held GameSpot Community Game Night #2, playing a sweet cel-shaded map in Unreal Tournament 2004. We had a great tournout, including staffers like Jody Robinson, Greg Mueller, and Jason Ocampo. As always, I had my ass handed to me, but you should still take some time to check out some of the awesome footage . We couldn't decide on a single winner of this week's Bounty Hunter emblem though, so after some deliberation, we are granting two bounty hunter emblems this week, so DJ_Lae and Sandylynx9 are this week's joint winners! Congratulations, guys, on thoroughly pwning us up one side and down the other. Original discussion. |
June 20, 2007 | Forza 2 | None mentioned | evin Van Ord, Aaron Thomas, Jeff Gerstmann, Alex Navarro, Brian Ekberg, Justin Calvert | GameSpot Community Game Night has proven to be a lot more popular than I expected, both among the users and the GS editors. This time, we were graced with the presence of Aaron Thomas, Jeff Gerstmann, Alex Navarro, Brian Ekberg, Justin Calvert, and Myself. We're oot and aboot! But as always, I learned something new. I already knew I am not great at driving games, particularly when I'm thrown into a racing car when I've been driving Civics so far in my career. But ya know, I did learn one important new thing: 1. This is not Burnout. Granted, I never crashed on purpose, but frankly, I am not used to the handling of the best cars in the game and I didn't have any A-class cars in my career, so I was a swerving madman. Wasn't excruciatingly horrible, but my inability to recover from crashes killed me. Game Night #10 Discussion. |
June 13, 2007 | Warcraft III | Kevin Van Ord, Stanley Lin. Aaron Thomas | BenderUnit22 | So against all odds, we played Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos for GameSpot Game Night #9 this past Wednesday. I know, I know, why not Frozen Throne or DotA? Well, I wanted to cement game night this weekend, and Warcraft III was not my first choice. However, I had issues with the the two other PC games I was considering. My Far Cry install disc was scratched up and wouldn't install, so I decided to try that another time. Then, I went to install Neverwinter Nights and couldn't find the manual with the CD key. I was so pissed. So I went with Warcraft III, but I don't (BLASPHEMY!) own Frozen Throne, so we went vanilla. It worked out though, since not only were several of us noobs, but others were so used to the Frozen Throne balance that they were caught off guard. And now a secret: it was the first time I had ever played Warcraft III online. Ever. I hadn't even played it for about three years, and I had only played the campaign, never skirmished. So I was proud to be on the winning team and actually feel like I was somewhat of an asset. I also thank Stanley Lin for joining. Aaron Thomas wanted to join us, but he chose to go to The Police concert instead. Bastard! So anyway, what did I learn this week? 1. Don't throw out game manuals. The damn CD key may be in it. Crap. Well, I will grab another copy of Neverwinter Nights and we will all try again soon. 2. Good teammates will give you a false sense of security. I say I was an asset, but it may just be that I sucked and was saved by my more experienced teammates. But I am still going to say I was fairly good, even if it could be a lie. 3. Don't creep too early. I really should have waited to build a few more huntresses before heading out. Luckily I pulled back when I realized I wasn't quite ready. |

May 16, 2007 | Command & Conquer 3 | Kevin Van Ord | None mentioned | So this week we played Command & Conquer 3 for GameSpot Game Night, and I was thrilled that we played a game in which I could actually hold my own. I am not the best C&C3 player on earth, but I am no slouch, and I had a good deal of fun. So what did I learn this week? 1. I really need to work on defending against the Scrin when I play Nod. I should be able to hold off their strong late-game air attacks better than I do. The best way to handle it is to keep the Scrin player from getting that far, but in case, I did a creditable job of setting up air defenses in our 4 vs. 4 matches. In general, though, I leave myself far too vulnerable against the Scrin. 2. I love RTS teamplay. Both team games, I played rather well, aside from the time I said we needed to attack the ion cannon counting down--and it was a teammates cannon. Ah well, I was excited. In the first team game in particular, I expanded quickly and was able to build up some decent tiberium reserves. On the other hand, one of my teammates set up a really nice turret rush, which I think is cheap when someone does it againt me, but didn't bother me in the slightest when it benefitted me! So here is some footage pulled from the replay file. I love C&C3, and I expect to be playing it for a good long while. It's got a lot of heart and soul, and it's also *gasp* a lot of fun to play.
