Activision's other big announcement at this year's Comic-Con is the release date for Spider-Man: Edge of Time, which is slated for October 4 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo 3DS. The game takes place primarily in the multi-floored Alchemax building, which was crawling with guards and other security personnel intent on keeping us out. This was the first time we were able to get hands-on time with the game, and while we were told initially that Amazing and 2099 have a different moveset--Amazing being more nimble and 2099 being more of a brawler--we were given all their powers (and unlimited health), so there didn't seem to be a huge difference between the two. The purpose of the demo was to throw us into combat-heavy situations just to get a feel for the game. The first half of the demo had us crawling through 2099's timeline, punching guards and looking for keys to open up more areas. There was a free-fall section that tested our reflexes, which makes you wonder just how big this building really is. When we eventually made it to the bottom (alive, mostly), we skipped ahead to Amazing's timeline and fought some less-high-tech enemies, but these guys were more heavily shielded. With Amazing's heavy attack, you can easily stun the guards, forcing them to back off a bit, and then you're free to do your deadly spider dance around them. Whatever dialogue that was going on between the two Spideys was hard to hear because of the environment that we were in, but from what we gathered in the picture-in-picture display, Amazing had to destroy some mutants that were still incubating in test chambers to save 2099 in his timeline.
The combat is fast and hectic but satisfying after you clear a room. However, the camera did swing in a bit too close at times, and while you're zipping around it's hard to see. You normally customize your characters as you progress through the game, but since we had everything unlocked, we were blazing through the corridors and just having a good time crawling on walls and flinging webs into foes. When you're lost, pushing up on the D pad will give you some idea as to where to go next.
He's quite flexible, that Spider-Man.
The trailer also teased that the two Spideys will swap timelines, and we don't know yet what kind of role Black Cat will play, but we're sure that there's more info to come before the game ships on October 4. Until then, stay tuned to GameSpot for your friendly neighborhood updates.
