ClanBase shuts down
ClanBase shuts down-March 2024
Mar 31, 2025 5:59 PM

This article was originally published on GameSpot's sister site onGamers.com, which was dedicated to esports coverage.

Being one of the biggest host for online tournaments in various games at the beginning of the century, the ClanBase crew have today announced that years of mismanagement from the site's owner, GGL, has led them to discontinue the project.

Marcus 'djWHEAT' Graham, who had employed his services for the site at multiple occasions in the early 2000's, lamented the passing of the site in a corresponding reddit thread:

As someone who worked at GGL it was painful to see the decline (which happened pretty rapidly) of a site which provided about 50-60% of the esports content I casted from 2002 to 2005.

Graham went on to also share his experience working at ClanBase following GGL's purchase of the site, claiming that "it was impossible to get things done" and sympathized heavily with the site's staff that were based in Europe.

According to the press release on the ClanBase.org webpage, GGL were allegedly not able to cover the costs for hosting the site, leading to an extreme amount of downtime whenever the bills needed paying. Desperate measures were taken by the company, such as hosting a ladder solely for poker on the site as well as offering a premium membership to users with little incentive and even considering the idea of letting adult entertainment sites advertise on the website.

The full statement by the final ClanBase crew can be found here, where a detailed explanation is provided by the staff.
