Buzz developer lays off 20-November 2024

Relentless Software is best known for its work on Sony's quiz game show series Buzz, delivering trivia to PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 gamers since 2005. However, at the beginning of this year, Relentless said that it had ended its exclusivity contract with Sony, with director and cofounder Andrew Eades telling GamesIndustry.biz, "We wanted to change the company to have much more breadth and embrace the new digital platforms we saw coming in."

Blue Toad Murder Files represents Relentless' new direction. This week, Eades has provided GI.biz with more info on the new direction of his studio, though it is of a decidedly dourer sort. Speaking to the UK gaming news site, Eades confirmed that Relentless has laid off approximately 20 employees.

"We have recently restructured the company to work on a variety of different projects and different platforms," Eades said. "That has meant some redundancies as we need to match our skillset with the requirements of the projects that we are working on today. We will be recruiting for a number of roles to fulfil the needs of new projects."

Relentless isn't currently hiring for any new positions on its website. However, the Brighton, UK-based studio has previously expressed interest in developing content for a variety of connected consoles and other devices. The studio's first step in this direction, episodic adventure game Blue Toad Murder Files, saw release for the PC at the end of 2010.
