Actor Brendan Fraser has spoken about an incident that occurred while filming a scene for The Mummy, where he was choked out and nearly died.
Speaking in a recent interview during The Kelly Clarkson Show, the actor--who was promoting his latest work in the upcoming film The Whale--discussed his movie history and recalled a situation where he was choked out by a fake noose that was tied around his neck while filming a specific stunt for the 1999 movie.
When asked by Clarkson how the situation occurred, Fraser said that while filming he was standing on his toes with the rope around his neck when director Stephen Sommers told him it didn't look like he was choking and asked if he could "sell it" in another take.
"The camera swooped around I went up on my toes and the guy holding the rope above, he pulled it up a little higher and I was stuck on my toes, I had nowhere to go but down," Fraser explained. "So he was pulling up and I was going down. And the next thing I knew, my elbow was in my ear, the world was sideways, there was gravel in my teeth and everyone was really quiet."
The actor doesn't specifically say he lost consciousness following the scene, but he remembers coming to after, with the stunt coordinator above him clapping and calling his name to wake him up. "I was like, 'What happened?' and he says, 'Congratulations, you're in the club, same thing happened to Mel Gibson on Braveheart.'"
Last month, Brendan Fraser spoke in a separate interview and spoke about the possibility of returning for another Mummy movie, saying, "...it's kinda been an open-ended question for some time now. I'm not opposed to it."
