Mike Flanagan is set to direct an adaptation of Christopher Pike's sci-fi horror novel The Season of Passage. Flanagan is best known for the Netflix shows The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor, and the movie Doctor Sleep.
Flanagan will write the screenplay with his brother James for Intrepid Pictures and Universal. The filmmaker confirmed the news on Twitter, staying that "this project has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager," adding that he used to "daydream the theatrical trailer for this movie back in the early '90s."
"I see you brought the fire..." This project has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager. I'm so excited to be collaborating with my brother James, and my partner in crime @IntrepidPix on this epic horror movie - in space - for @UniversalPics. https://t.co/YEn7iOj5yb

The Season of Passage was published in 1992 and focuses on NASA's first manned mission to Mars. The Russians had previously visited the Red Planet, but all contact was lost shortly after they landed, and the crew never returned. The story centers on a medical officer named Lauren Wagner, who has been experiencing terrible nightmares ahead of her journey to Mars.
This is the second Christopher Pike book that is being adapted by Flanagan. His version of Pike's young adult horror anthology The Midnight Club is being made for Netflix, and in February the show's cast was revealed. Flanagan has also produced a Netflix horror series titled Midnight Mass, which was shot last year and arrives later in 2021.
Flanagan's The Haunting of Bly Manor was released in October last year. In his review for GameSpot, Mason Downey described it as "as much a slow burn drama as it is a horror show" that is "far more interested in subverting expectations than leaning into them."
