Black Ops 4's Battle Royale Mode Might Not Run At Franchise's Trademark 60FPS-September 2024
Sep 22, 2024 10:21 PM

Part of what makes Call of Duty so compelling for some is how multiplayer runs at 60FPS, which makes the experience feel fluid and smooth. Now, Activision has said it cannot promise that Black Ops 4's battle royale mode, Blackout, will run at that frame rate.

Design director David Vonderhaar answered 195 of Game Informer's questions about Blackout, and one of them pertained to frame rate. Vonderhaar said Blackout technically can run at 60FPS, and he said 60FPS is always the target, but he suggested the game might not always achieve it.

Now Playing: Call Of Duty Black Ops 4 - Blackout Battle Royale Introduction Trailer

Black Ops 4 is coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but it's not clear what platforms Vonderhaar was referring to as it relates to Blackout's frame rate.

What Vonderhaar was more definitive about, however, is that Black Ops 4 will definitely not be locked at a lower frame rate, like 30 FPS as the interviewer suggested.

Blackout takes place on the biggest map in Call of Duty history. This, along with the multitude of players (matches will contain 80 combatants in the beta) and the mixture of weapons, vehicles, and other items might all be contributing to Blackout's technical complexity compared to traditional multiplayer. This in turn could affect how Blackout performs from a frame rate perspective in certain circumstances.

This is an issue that most large-scale games contend with. For example, Fortnite can chug during particularly involved and intense sequences in battle royale matches.

Black Ops 4's Blackout beta starts on September 10 on PS4 before coming to other systems later. Here are some other things Vonderhaar said about Blackout in the Game Informer video.

There will be 80 players to a match. It will support custom games, but "not as you think of them."Split-screen support is "feasible," and Treyarch is testing this now.The map is set in northern California. He declined to reveal the name of the map but teased it might be located somewhere in the map.A second map could be added later. There will be dozens of characters available to play as.There might be character cameos from other Treyarch games and potentially other Activision titles. There will be no platform-exclusive DLC for Blackout. You'll get new characters by completing limited-time events. It would be "interesting" if Blackout is offered as a standalone release, but Vonderhaar wouldn't confirm anything. There is no cross-play.Black Ops 4 launches on October 12 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
