Binding of Isaac Creator Cancels Mew-Genics Development
Binding of Isaac Creator Cancels Mew-Genics Development-September 2024
Sep 21, 2024 7:09 AM

Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen has confirmed that Mew-Genics, a game originally announced in 2012, has been put on hold indefinitely.

In a statement to Eurogamer, McMillen said he may return to the project some time in the future.

"I'm unsure of its future but there is a chance we will attempt to revamp it in a few years with a new design of mine that will push it in a new direction that will hopefully make it more exciting for both of us to work on," he said. "But sadly till then it's not gunna happen."

Mew-Genics was previously described by McMillen as the strangest project he's worked on. Very few details on what gameplay entailed were revealed, but it was set to be "randomly generated, strange, and involve cats." The idea was conceived in a game jam Team Meat founders McMillen and Tommy Refenes held in September 2012.

News of its cancellation follows the announcement of a game called The Legend of Bum-Bo, which McMillen is developing with regular collaborators James Id and Ridiculon. The game is a "turn-based puzzle RPG type thingy that's randomly generated."

McMillen has teased that The Legend of Bum-Bo's will tie into Binding of Isaac in some way: "But why is this on the Isaac blog?! What does this have to do with Isaac? When Isaac!? Isaac? Isaac! Why!? Well I'm sure those questions will be answered in the coming months once we tease a bit more."
