Bethesda’s Todd Howard Says He’s Sometimes Afraid of Fallout 76 Going Multiplayer
Bethesda’s Todd Howard Says He’s Sometimes Afraid of Fallout 76 Going Multiplayer-October 2024
Oct 18, 2024 6:27 PM

The upcoming Fallout 76 is Bethesda’s first online multiplayer only Fallout installment, and it appears that the game director is sometimes afraid of trying that out.

The Fallout games have always been single-player titles, although some mods made multiplayer possible. While some fans have been asking for a multiplayer mode in Fallout 4, many others are afraid of what such a mode might do with the Fallout franchise.

With Fallout 76, Bethesda is taking the multiplayer route nonetheless, and while Bethesda’s Todd Howard appears to be excited about trying out multiplayer in Fallout, he also expressed to be somewhat anxious about it. At least, that’s what Howard said in a recent interview with The Guardian.

“We want to be careful with our fans and other people who ask, ‘Is this what Fallout is for ever now?’”, Howard told The Guardian. ”It’s clearly not. It’s definitely its own thing,” he stressed. “We had the idea, and for a while now we’ve been thinking we should try it ... we are sometimes afraid of doing it, as much as our fans are afraid of us doing it. But we’ve got to try new things.”

The online prequel was officially announced last month, and Bethesda already said that Fallout 5 will focus on single-player once again.

Reclamation Day, 2102. Twenty-five years after the bombs fall, you and your fellow Vault Dwellers—chosen from the nation’s best and brightest – emerge into post-nuclear America. Play solo or join together as you explore, quest, build, and triumph against the wasteland’s greatest threats.

“We’ve been asked forever to bring multiplayer to one of our worlds,” said Todd Howard, Game Director at Bethesda Game Studios. “And once we had this idea, we knew it was perfect for Fallout. It’s great to finally share this game and this world with everyone.”

Fallout 76 is slated for a release on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year on November 14.
