The Cyberathelete Professional League (CPL) has announced that its Babbage's CPL Event kicked off today at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas. The event, which will run through Sunday, December 17, features 750 players in three separate tournaments competing for US$122,000 in cash prizes. More than 1,500 registered attendees are expected.
In the tournaments, contestants play on one of 160 Gateway 1.4GHz Pentium 4 computers linked through a LAN. The setup uses more than four miles of category 5 Monster Cable and will use the same amount of electricity in four days as a typical neighborhood would use in a month. The total cost of running the event, including the cash prizes, is estimated to be more than $800,000.
