Five weeks into its run at the box office, Avatar: The Way of Water has once again seized the top spot domestically. The four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend saw scores of people show up to cinemas, resulting in the Avatar sequel having another big weekend--as predicted--that pulled in $40.6 million in ticket sales according to Box Office Mojo.
Combined with its run in international territories, Avatar 2 has made over $1.9 billion so far and looks set to claim Spider-Man: No Way Home's position as the sixth-highest-grossing movie of all time across the world. With solid box office performance, director James Cameron is ready to move forward with Avatar 3, 4, and 5.
Beyond the waters of Pandora, M3GAN also had a successful second weekend. The killer AI companion movie remained in second place after its better-than-expected debut, pulling in another $21.7 million in domestic ticket sales, and Universal is already starting work on a sequel. When it came to new movies, Gerard Butler and Mike Colter's action flick Plane debuted in fifth place with $12 million, after originally being expected to grab the third place position. Not even sympathy for Butler accidentally wiping his face with acid and positive reviews could help the film soar higher.
The remake of House Party arrived in sixth place, earning $4.4 million from 1,400 screens, while the rest of the top ten included familiar films such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and the Tom Hanks-starring A Man Called Otto.
