The Nintendo Wii launched in Australia December 7, and the latest sales charts from data trackers GfK Australia show that the system made an immediate impact on Australia's game sales charts.
Sales charts for the week of December 4 to December 10 show that the latest Zelda adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, grabbed the No. 1 position in the overall sales charts. Games for Nintendo's new system actually bookended the list of best sellers, as Ubisoft's Red Steel landed in 10th position.
The strong Wii debut wasn't enough to break the PlayStation 2's grip on the charts, however, with six of the top 10 belonging to Sony's console. EA's Need for Speed Carbon and THQ's WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007 for the PS2 continued to perform strongly, securing second and third position, respectively. The Sims 2: Pets for PC and Gears of War for the Xbox 360 were the only other non-PS2 inclusions. Gears of War slipped four spots to seventh place for the week.
Other notable titles for the Wii during its debut week in Australia included Rayman Raving Rabbids, Super Monkey Ball, and Call of Duty 3, which took third, fourth, and fifth spots in the Wii-specific charts. While GfK Australia did not actually disclose the name of the 10th best-selling Wii game due to limited availability at retailers, the only Australian launch titles not named in the top 10 were Barnyard, GT Pro Series, Madden NFL 07, Monster Truck 4x4, Open Season, and Splinter Cell Double Agent.
