Assassin's Creed Odyssey "Nearly Finished" A Year Ago, Annual Sequels Not Planned-October 2024
Oct 22, 2024 12:22 AM

Assassin's Creed Odyssey follows just one year after Origins, echoing the annual sequels that are widely believed to have led to franchise fatigue before Ubisoft took a year off to tinker with the formula. That doesn't necessarily mean we should expect a resuming of annualized sequels, according to chief creative officer Serge Hascoet.

"What we did was we built two teams--one in Montreal and one in Quebec--and we wanted to give them enough time," Hascoet told Game Informer. "I played Assassin's Creed Odyssey last November, and it was nearly finished. For us it's not a question of annualization, it's more a question of quality. If the team has enough time to produce and polish something, if it's at the highest quality, I think people can enjoy an experience of 80 hours every year. It's possible, but I’m not saying we will have one every year. It's not the plan."

Now Playing: Assassin's Creed Odyssey On PC And The Uplay Problem - Steam Punks

We already know Ubisoft isn't planning an Assassin's Creed release in 2019. CEO Yves Guillemot suggested the gap will be filled by extra Odyssey content that could last "a couple of years." It seems likely that the company still has two more Assassin's Creed games in development, but the comments from Hascoet imply they could sit on them for a while so as to not oversaturate the audience with too much assassinating.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is available on Friday, or already if you sprung for some of the special editions. Be sure to check out our tips for beginners if you're just diving into the world of ancient Greece, or read GameSpot's Assassin's Creed Odyssey review if you're still on the fence.
