Ahead of PS5 Release, Sony Reveals PlayStation Studios Branding For Exclusives-November 2024
Nov 17, 2024 6:40 AM

In an effort to consolidate its first-party games and better communicate this to consumers, Sony has unveiled PlayStation Studios--a unification of all projects produced by the PlayStation owners.

The brand was revealed alongside a new opening video that will be used on advertising and promotional media when the PlayStation 5 launches, presumably later this year. The PlayStation Studio logo will also appear on box art and artwork associated to games that Sony either produces or develops in-house.

The opening video format is similar to one Marvel has used for its films, featuring glimpses at some of the most successful games Sony has produced. This includes Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, and more.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.Biz, Eric Lempel, senior vice president and head of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said the new brand will better communicate to players when they are playing a Sony-produced title, and the quality they can expect as a result.

"We think this is a good way to let consumers know that, if they see it, then the quality games they've come to expect from us are here," Lempel explained. "And this brand will exist for well-known existing franchises, as well as brand new franchises that we have yet to explore."

Lempel also added that the branding will be applied to Sony-produced games that don't appear on PlayStation consoles. Although it won't be present when Horizon Zero Dawn launches on PC this year, Lempel says it will appear on future ports.

The branding will also accompany games that Sony produces with third-party developers. "If our studios are managing the production of these games and working with an external developer, it will still come out under the PlayStation Studios brand," Lempel added. "It doesn't mean that we outright own the developer, but it just means we brought it up as a first-party. In a lot of cases we don't own the developer."

There's no word yet which game will be the first to feature this new PlayStation Studios branding, but it won't be The Last of Us Part II or Ghost of Tsushima.
