Acclaim Entertainment announced Wednesday, despite expected disappointing results in the company's revenues, its targeted product development and cost reduction strategies for 1998 will return the company to profitability.
"Fiscal 1997 was an important transition year for Acclaim and the interactive entertainment industry. As the installed base of next-generation consoles reached critical mass, we launched Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, the most successful third-party Nintendo 64 game to date," Gregory Fischbach, Acclaim Entertainment's cochairman and CEO, said in a statement. "We continue to build on this expertise in fiscal 1998 with the release of NFL Quarterback Club '98, currently the number one selling N64 game, and Extreme-G. In 1997, Acclaim also accomplished its major initiative to reduce operating expenses."
In fiscal 1998, Acclaim has plenty of key titles, including the already-released NFL Quarterback Club '98, Extreme-G, and Constructor. Upcoming games include Turok 2, Forsaken, Shadowman, Riven, Batman & Robin (the only movie license in the bunch), NHL Breakaway Hockey, Motocross, Wrecking Balls, WWF: Warzone, and All-Star Baseball.
For the 1997 fiscal year, Acclaim reported net revenues of US$165.4 million, compared with $161.9 million the previous year. Net losses amounted to $159.2 million, compared with $221.4 million the previous year.
