Xbox’s Spencer: “We’re Not Building A Strategy In Response To” Sony-November 2024
Nov 20, 2024 4:20 AM

Unification between PC and Xbox is one of Microsoft’s most pressing ambitions, and while it would seem that Microsoft is merely looking for a way to  compete with Sony and its dominant PS4 console, this isn’t the case according to Microsoft's Phil Spencer.

Microsoft has become more and more keen on bringing Xbox and PC players together, and via the Universal Windows Platform, Xbox Live, and the Xbox Play Anywhere feature, the company aims to unify both platforms.

While Microsoft’s Xbox One has been outselling the Xbox 360 at this point in the console generation, the console has roughly sold half of Sony’s console – the Playstation 4. The PS4 has been the dominant console since it launched back in 2013, and has currently sold more than 40 million units. While Microsoft hasn’t shared Xbox One sales/shipment numbers since 2014, it’s safe to say that the PS4 user base is far larger than that of the Xbox One.

Some might argue that through Microsoft’s platform unification, the company is hoping to increase its user base in order to compete against Sony. In a recent interview with The Guardian however, Spencer noted Sony's success with the PS4, but also stated that Microsoft is trying to deliver what customers and gamers have been asking for.

Microsoft's strategy "fundamentally different" from Sony

According to Spencer, Sony’s strategy is very different from Microsoft’s strategy for the future.

“Sony is doing incredibly well with the PS4 but they’re doing something fundamentally different from us. We’re not building a strategy in response to what they’re doing, we’re building a response to what I see customers and gamers asking us for”, Spencer told The Guardian.

Of course, Spencer is also hinting at the upcoming PS4 Neo and Microsoft’s upcoming 6 teraflops Xbox, currently dubbed ‘Project Scorpio’. Earlier this year Spencer stated they he doesn’t believe in small numbers, and if Microsoft would move forward, they would do so in big numbers.
