Xbox Series X Vs. Series S: Which Sells Better?
Xbox Series X Vs. Series S: Which Sells Better?-November 2024
Nov 16, 2024 5:42 AM

The massive Xbox document leak has revealed lots of juicy information about Microsoft's gaming plans and other information, including a breakdown of Series X and Series S sales. As it turns out, Microsoft's prediction that the less expensive and less powerful Series S would be the better-selling device turned out to be true.

IGN reports that one of the leaked documents shows that Series S accounted for 74.8% of sales, with Series X making up 25.1%, at least in the relatively early days of the platform's lifecycle. This information is accurate as of early 2022, but the mix has shifted significantly since then, it seems. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said on Twitter/X that Series S makes up "a bit more than half" of total sales of new Xbox consoles in the US.

The Series S jumped out to a bigger lead over the Series X in part because of the constrained supply of the Series X earlier in its lifecycle. Price is also a major factor.

The Series S is priced at $300, and price can be a very motivating purchase factor, so it's no big surprise to know it's selling better than the $500 Series X. A $350 version of the Series S with a 1TB hard drive is also available now.

In 2021, Microsoft's Phil Spencer told Kotaku that he expects the Series S to sell better than the Series X in part because of its price. "I think, over the generation, our expectation would be that price really matters and that you would see the Series S sell more," he said.

Microsoft reportedly has additional Xbox consoles coming, including a mid-gen refresh and a new Xbox in 2028, based on information from the big leak. The leaked documents are more than a year old, and Microsoft has said "so much has changed," though this may very well be spin and damage control.

"We will share the real plans when we are ready," Spencer said in response to the leaks.
