WWE Payback 2020 PPV Results: Roman Reigns Shows Up Late, Wrecks Everyone, Leaves-October 2024
Oct 18, 2024 11:32 AM

WWE's Payback PPV came to a close on the evening of Sunday, August 30. The main event for the 2020 PPV was the triple threat, no holds barred match for the Universal Championship. The Fiend defended his title against Braun Strowman and Roman Reigns--who showed up very late to the match. In the end, Reigns showed up, wrecked everyone, and left the scene, with a new title in his possession.

However, that wasn't the only title change over the course of the evening. Check out all the results for Payback below, along with a few notes.

WWE's Summerslam was just last week, but it's already time for another PPV. That's right. The Payback event airs tonight on the WWE Network. While Roman Reigns surprised everyone in the Thunderdome for Summerslam, he's headed straight to the main event for Payback as he takes on The Fiend and Braun Strowman for The Fiend's newly-won Universal Championship in a triple threat match.

The Amway Center in Orlando, Florida will be hosting Payback, surrounded by the Thunderdome--which recently had some issues with misbehaving fans. Regardless, the new WWE innovation puts the faces of fans on screens surrounding the ring so it feels like there's an audience--kinda. Also, it helps that there is audience noise being piped in through the arena.

How to watch:

The best way to watch Payback is through the WWE Network. Yes, you can order the PPV through your cable or satellite provider, but it's a bit pricier. The WWE Network costs $10 a month and aside from streaming live events, there is a large back catalog of wrestling shows and original series to check out.

Here is what you can expect from the match card for Payback. There may be a few additions or changes throughout the day and even into the Kickoff show.

Let's get ready for some Payback. Below, you'll find updates and info from every match, as it happens. Keep refreshing to find out all the winners and losers for the WWE PPV.

Kickoff Show

No notes yet, but we'll keep you updated.

The Riott Squad vs. The Iiconics (Kickoff Show)

The Riott Squad wins by pin.

There was a very bizarre moment where Billie Kay convinced Liv Morgan that Ruby Riott bumped her off the apron, and Morgan was conflicted about it for quite some time, refusing to tag in. Regardless, The Riott Squad ended up getting the best of the Iiconics in the end.

Main card

Apollo Crews (c) vs. Bobby Lashley (United States Championship)

Lashley wins by sumbission.

Surprisingly, during the match, MVP and Benjamin did not interfere at all, not even to cause a distraction. However, while The Hurt Business was celebrating, Crews jumped Lashley, and told the new champ that he's getting his belt back.

Big E vs. Sheamus

Big E wins by pin.

While we're not reviewing the show this month, it's important to note this was a great match. It was two powerhouses, beating each other down in a back-and-forth bout that really delivered.

King Corbin vs. Matt Riddle

Riddle wins by pin.

Corbin attacked Riddle before the bell rang, so he had the upper-hand. However, in the end, Riddle bested the King and then danced his way up the entrance ramp.

During his post-match interview backstage, Corbin attacked Riddle from behind, before he was dragged away by some refs. The lost camera show was Riddle laying prone next to a fruit basket and a bunch of bottled waters.

Bayley & Sasha Banks (c) vs. Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax (Women's Tag Team Championship)

Baszler and Jax win by submission.

Baszler and Jax finally came together to work as a team. However, it was Baszler that picked up the win, as she submitted Banks and Bayley at the same exact time in an unforgettable moment. They are now the new Women's Tag Team Champions.

Keith Lee vs. Randy Orton

Keith Lee wins by pin.

The match was a bit shorter than anyone expected. While there have been plenty of notable NXT call-ups that have stumbled on Smackdown or Raw because of booking, Lee's match vs. Orton was great at Lee looking like the unstoppable force he was in NXT.

Dominik & Rey Mysterio vs. Seth Rollins & Murphy

The Mysterios win by pin.

Dominik had a few spotlight moments early on in the match, and got the pin after doing a frogsplash on Murphy at the end of the math. The Mysterios got the upper-hand after Murphy accidentally kicked Rollins from the outside. After the match, Rollins walked away from Murphy.

"The Fiend" (c) vs. Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman (No Holds Barred for Universal Championship)

Reigns wins by pin on Strowman.

Strowman attacked The Fiend during his entrance, before Reigns came to the ring. There have been numerous cuts to Alexa Bliss, backstage, watching the match. She's seemingly been placed in a Harley Quinn role. The Fiend superplexes Strowman, and it breaks the ring. At this point, Reigns comes out, signs the contract Paul Heyman is holding, and heads to the ring.

Reigns couldn't get the pin on The Fiend, but he did eventually get it on Strowman.
