Washington-based development company WildTangent has announced that it will launch a beta version of its multiplayer capabilities at this year's Game Developers Conference, which will take place from March 20 to 24 in San Jose, California. The multiplayer capabilities will let players using WildTangent's proprietary Web driver interact with other online users. WildTangent's Web driver has been used for several online games since its release, including SabreWing, RC Riot, Speedway, and Space Rocks.
The company has won the support of several high-profile publishers and developers, including Sony Online Entertainment, Mattel, and Human Head Studios. WildTangent's browser-based platform lets users play streaming games without ever having to download and install the games. The technology uses advanced compression techniques to provide higher-quality graphics and sound than typical Web-based games, and it takes advantage of hardware acceleration. The Web driver also lets developers build games using a wide variety of programming languages, including Java, JavaScript, Visual Basic, VB Script, C, and C++.
