What we heard: Today, Nintendo officially unveiled its new home console, titled the Wii U, at its E3 press conference in downtown Los Angeles.

  The Wii U controller.

While the new console supports all of the Wii's controllers, the new Wii U controller has a large touch-sensitive 6.2-inch screen surrounded by a D pad, two sets of shoulder buttons, and four face buttons. It is capable of streaming a video signal to the controller's screen, making it possible to play a Wii U game both on the TV screen and on the controller.

Nintendo also confirmed that such games as Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon Online, Rabbids, Tekken, Ninja Gaiden 3, Darksiders 2, and Batman are in development for the new console.

However, the publisher did not name a more specific time frame for the Wii U's release (other than the previously mentioned 2012) and also made no mention of price. Now, Australian local retailer EB is estimating that the Wii U will retail for AU$599 in Australia. The retailer currently has the console on preorder.

The official story: Although Nintendo has made no mention of price or release for the Wii U, EB Games Australia seems to be estimating its own prices for the newly announced hardware at E3. Yesterday, the retailer listed the Sony PlayStation Vita for an "estimated RRP" of AU$349 for the Wi-Fi model.

Bogus or not bogus?: Hard to tell at this very early stage. Nintendo has only just announced the console and released very little information about the new system and its specifications.
