This post contains Westworld Season 1 spoilers.
One of the more memorable scenes from Westworld's third episode last night came at the end, when two park operators tracked down a runaway host. Once they found him, at the bottom of a crevasse, they put him into a sleep state, while Luke Hemsworth's character started to saw his head off.
Midway through the process, the robot host wakes up and punches Hemsworth's character, before climbing out of the crevasse. He picks up a huge rock and for a moment it appears that he is going to crush Shannon Woodward's character, but instead, he bashes in his own skull, splattering blood everywhere. It was an intense scene, and it's mentioned later that the host might have killed himself because he had some knowledge that he didn't want the park's operators to know about.
We still don't have all the answers. You can re-watch the scene in the video above, which also features insight from the show's creators and actors.
Jonathan Nolan, who adapted Westworld for TV with his wife Lisa Joy, teased that this episode is just a primer for a bigger plotline in the future.
"You begin to realize that something darker and deeper is afoot in the park," he said. "The question being, Are the hosts coming alive? Or are they being manipulated by someone else for ends we don't necessarily know yet?"
Both options are pretty terrifying to think about.
This is the second new Westworld video that HBO has released today. The first offered a tease for some dramatic events to come in Episode 4, which airs this coming Sunday, October 23.
The show stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsden, Ed Harris, and Anthony Hopkins. It's produced by Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams.
