Outside the US and Canada, the game is called "Patience", and rightly so, as it provides a leisurely and calming means to spend time with cards. It is thought to have originated in Germany or Scandinavia, with the earliest mention of it found in a game collection in 1788. Its popularity soared in the 19th century, and more recently, it became a significant part of the pop culture landscape due to its inclusion in the basic software package of the Windows operating system.

The first Klondike Solitaire game received such widespread acclaim and became a common way to pass the time that its victory animation has now become a standard feature in most digital versions of Solitaire Classic.
