Netflix have begun to make major in-roads into the world of film production. This month saw the release of the acclaimed drama Beasts of No Nation, and now the trailer for the upcoming Adam Sandler western comedy The Ridiculous 6 can be watched. Check it out below:
The Ridiculous 6 originally began production at Warner, but the studio dropped the project in October last year. Although they declined to comment on the reason, many suggested that the announcement that Sandler had signed a four-movie deal with Netflix was a big part of that decision. The film subsequently became part of the streaming giant's release slate.
The movie also met with some controversy in April, when a dozen Native American actors walked off the set, in protest at their depictions in the script. Netflix defended the film, stating: "It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of--but in on--the joke.”
The Ridiculous 6 follows Beasts of No Nation to the service, and is the second of several films that Netflix are producing. Although their immediate release onto the streaming service has ensured that very few cinemas will play these movies, Netflix have confirmed that they are extremely happy with the decision to move into film production and distribution.
Earlier this week, Ted Sarandos, the head of content acquisition at the company, revealed that three million people had to date watched Beast of No Nation in the US alone. "I think [it's] a bigger audience than any specialty film could ever hope for in its first two weeks of release, and maybe for its entire run. And we're just starting," he told Deadline.
The Ridiculous 6 is directed by Frank Coraci and co-stars Terry Crews, Jorge Garcia, Taylor Lautner, Rob Schneider, and Luke Wilson. It is set to hit Netflix on December 11, 2015.
