MGM and Amazon have released the first trailer for the upcoming basketball movie Air, which stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in a story about the creation of the popular Air Jordan shoe.
Affleck directs and plays Nike founder Phil Knight, while Damon portrays the shoe salesman Sonny Vaccaro, who famously signed Michael Jordan to a shoe deal that would become iconic. The film also stars Viola Davis, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker, Jason Bateman, and Marlon Wayans.
Michael Jordan himself will appear in the movie by way of archival footage, but he won't be played by an actor in any other scenes, according to IndieWire.
Affleck and Damon co-wrote Good Will Hunting and won an Oscar for it back in the '90s. This is the first time that Affleck is directing his buddy, however. Affleck and Damon started a production company in 2022, Artists Equity, and Air is the first project to come of that.
Air debuts in April and will be shown in more than 3,000 screens across the US, which is the most for any Amazon Studios film to date (but not the most for MGM, which Amazon acquired in 2022). Some of Amazon's other theatrical releases have included the Oscar-winning Manchester by the Sea and The Big Sick. Air, like those films, will come to Prime Video later on.
According to Variety, Amazon shelled out $7 million to promote Air with a Super Bowl commercial this weekend.
