Watch Dogs: Legion Gets Cross-Platform Progression For Online Modes
Watch Dogs: Legion Gets Cross-Platform Progression For Online Modes-December 2024
Dec 21, 2024 12:02 PM

Watch Dogs: Legion is set to release on October 29 for PC and current-gen platforms and on console launch days for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. However, today Ubisoft revealed that the first wave of free content, which implements online multiplayer modes, is coming on December 3. I was able to speak with Legion's live producer Lathieeshe Thillainathan about the team's approach to updates and DLC, but we also talked about how cross-progression would work.

We had previously known about free next-gen upgrades and cross-gen save transfers being available for the game, but in light of the multiplayer reveal, I asked about how Watch Dogs: Legion's online component fits into all this.

Now Playing: 20 Minutes of Surprisingly Serious Gameplay - Watch Dogs: Legion

"The online sandbox cross-progression is universal on any platform you play. Regardless if you play on PlayStation or PC, it'll go wherever you're playing," Thillainathan said. This includes any of the six platforms Watch Dogs: Legion is available on--PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Stadia. He continued, "We're able to save it [online progress] on our side, so it allows us to much easier do cross-progression among all the different platforms all at once."

Online multiplayer, as part of the December 3 update, includes a four-player sandbox mode in the game's open-world London, dynamic in-game events, co-op missions, PvP modes, and the Tactical Ops raid-like co-op missions.

Thillainathan also clarified that single-player cross-progression works across families of platforms. "You can go between any of the Xbox platforms as part of the free upgrade that we have. So if you upgrade on Xbox, you're going to get a copy of Watch Dogs: Legion on the next-gen platforms and your saved games will go forward." He continued, "All the current Xboxes and the next-gen Xboxes, and then PlayStation family, and then PC and Stadia, we treat as one family--between PC and Stadia, you can move your save files back and forth."

He concluded, "It just made a lot of sense for us if you purchase a next-gen console, you can continue playing Legion and your save comes over and you don't need to start over from wherever you are on the current-gen platforms."

For more on the game, be sure to check out all the details on Watch Dogs: Legion's free update and multiplayer modes. The first DLC called Bloodline was also revealed which brings back the original protagonist Aiden Pearce as well as Wrench from Watch Dogs 2, and includes an Assassin's Creed crossover character. In our latest preview, we covered how character weakness in Watch Dogs: Legion makes the play-as-anyone mechanic more interesting.
